It’s arrived. At least most of it has...
« on: January 10, 2021, 10:46:32 AM »
Just thought I’d share some January misery and ‘show case’ my classic HOS.

Julie, I’ll be in touch shortly if and when I can extract those carbs.

Happy New Year to all.

Looks like good project,  exciting to get something new to work on isn't it.

You'll have your work cut out with that old gummy fuel residue.

Good luck with the project Phil.  I see in one of the photos you have a bottle of fizz on the garage floor available for when things start to get annoying?

 Excellent planning mate!
Now where did I put that 10mm socket?

That was the second bottle.... ;)

Yes, a US import with Title deeds.

Carbs are indeed going to be tough. I can’t extract any of the jets or float pins. The set is currently resting nicely in a bath of carb cleaner.

Do yourself a favour - get a 5L can of pure acetone from one of the many suppliers on eBay. That used with a stiff paint brush will def help get rid of the gunge. It’s the only thing I’ve found that will effectively shift it. You can also soak the float bowls in it...

Lol
Obviously. And wear gloves (unless you want your nail varnish to be easily removed).

I found fresh petrol is as effective as Acetone but it does take a little longer to work. Three out of the four carbs on my 400/4 were seized solid. Most of the sliders came free after 24 hours or less - one took a couple of days. I just sealed them in a Tupperware Box with some new petrol - if it looked dirty I changed it for fresh.

The pro's use Methylene Chloride but of course that's pretty nasty so not readily available these days.
