Uk registration.

Weh heh! That was a drawn out process well done DVLA for taking so many weeks to register my bike. At least she was registered as an historic vehicle and I didn’t have to apply separately. So taxed and ready to go, pity it’s in hundreds of pieces (or is it thousands of pieces) at the moment. Anybody know how many pieces to make a CB750K?

Presumably it's insured, no Mot needed just the declaration!

As an imported bike Phil, it was important when imported that the bike was supplied with owners document, equivalent to our registration document I suppose. Then with that, proof of import fees paid and nova cert. Then along with £55 payment and two page first registration in UK form, send to DVLA. Not insured yet Ted, guess I should SORN.

Yes, SORN online ASAP or you will get one of those nasty threatening letters from MIB threatening you with a £1000 fine.

Exactly how long did it take to register Johnny?
I'm just about to start the process with the BIL's Z400 that was bought new in Guernsey in 1981 with a Guernsey registration and brought back to the UK two weeks later to sit in a shed for 39 years never to be used or registered in the UK!
I have a feeling the process is going to become very painful with the tax and customs people asking why it sat in a shed without the import tax being paid at the time of importation. Truth is nobody knew it was there until two years ago when the house and shed were cleared, it was under a tarp with a load of hoarded junk piled on top. Henry Cole never visited that particular shed!

Trying to make sense of the same process now but as my bike is only 38 years old it needs an MOT first. Is it even possible to get an MOT on a bike that isn't registered? and I am faced with having to get it transported too and from a test station 50 miles away.

Reading the .gov website is totally confusing going on about vehicle approval and every link spawns another link to another confusing page.

I think if the bike is over 40 years old it is relatively straight forward especially if you have an existing title - V55/5, V112, NOVA, Invoice, Driving licence. £55 and Bob's your long waiting uncle but  less then 40 sounds like a different ball game.

Reading some interesting threads on the legality of getting insurance via the VIN number through specialist insurance brokers, booking an MOT and riding to the station without a registration plate. Cant say I have ever seen it happening and can you imagine the number of people shouting 'your number plates fallen off mate!'

I think I am going to wait another two years

 ;)you can insure a bike on frame number but they only give you a month to sort it all the way, you also mot on frame number and can legaly ride it there if you have insurance

I think it was about 7 weeks ish, I was just glad that I wasn’t sitting with bike idling away in garage waiting for it’s first run.😂😂  The most daunting was the application form which I had never filled in before. There seemed to be an awful lot of questions that I felt I should be putting something in the box if only I understood what they were asking.😂 The vat and import duties was initially dealt with by the shipping company, the company that brought the goods into the country I suppose. So before the bikes were unloaded buyers were contacted and billed which seemed straight forward enough, they then provided Nova document via email. Yes heli, not to mention the “old bill” having a double take before the “blues & twos” activated. I agree that certain things on website have been simplified but not everything is straight forward, I must admit I wasn’t looking forward to the whole process but wouldn’t be daunted to go through it again. One step at a time to gather the necessary paperwork then send and wait patiently. I’m fortunate now that I have registration but I won’t be riding CB750 this year, hopefully ready to go all being well 2022, after all this is my lockdown project (how long am I going to have to make it last?)😡

Johnny - word of warning, remove the pic or change the pic so the document number isn't showing.

At the moment, anyone could go online and register the bike in their name with the photo provided....

Not trying to be a smart arse - just genuinely pointing out the risk.

 Have done 2 or 3 over the years with US imports, the problem i had as i said was the insurance company charged a years fee(Carole Nash if i remember correctly) and wanted to cancell the policy after 4 weeks with no refund when i didnt have a reg to put on it a month later! They gave in after some arguing and gave me more time. Any insureabce firm CAN do it, you just need a thinking agent not the normal script reading moron!! With the known current DVLA delays they ought to give you extratime anyway
I have ridden bikes and driven kit cars for mot with no problems at all as long as you have a booked appointment, plod carry fones now and can check easy.
The only problem in the whole process is if DVLA want you to present it at a regional centre for "inspection" as you have to trailer it to that, when i did them if the proof of age letter was from the manufacturer or the foreign log book no inspection was done only if one of the "dating" services was used.
I still have thefirst MOT for my now sold gold 500 where DVLA(or rather Worcester office---now closed)  wrote the new reg above the frame number and stamped it

You don't need insurance to register an imported bike with DVLA unless it's being registered to a Norther Ireland address. It obviously needs to be insured if you're going to ride it on the road though. but if not just SORN it straight away after getting V5 back from Swansea. But, under 40 years old you still need an MOT so I suppose you have to either get temporary insurance or trailer it to the MOT station 🤔

Even though the VEL duty is zero you still have to Tax it each year. You mention in your first post that its taxed but strictly you need insurance to tax it so I can't figure that out. Main thing is that you do the SORN as others have said to avoid a penalty - can be done online. When I got my new registration document (It's not an import) I had to immediately SORN it as unable to change the duty to Historical without insuring it first. Local Post Office said I could change the taxation class without insurance. DVLA returned my registration book with a letter stating I could not change the taxation class until it was insured! Have decided to leave it as it is until I insure it for use on the road.

It seemed to be a requirement that I tax it along with first UK registration for whatever reason. No mention anywhere on application about insurance. There was also a box to fill with taxation class of vehicle so I stated that it was a historic vehicle. I will now of course sorn.
