Reg/rec wiring
« on: February 12, 2021, 06:43:29 PM »
Evening all,

New to the forum and I'm after a little advice. I'm wiring a cb550 for someone need some advice on the charging system I'm fitting a new style reg/rec.

3 yellow wires are pretty self explanatory
But the red, green and black I need some help with? The instructions are for the original loom but this bike came to me with no wiring at all.

Is the field coil "excited" by the reg/rec?

Ive attached a picture of the reg/rec that was purchased from David silver

Thanks

I put that block connector on.. I pulled the red and green out as I'm. Not sure where they should go?
Yes the black had 2 spades.. Like I said it's not going on a stock loom

The manual only shows the old style separate regulator and rectifier..
I need to figure if this new style excites the field coil or its a power from another source

Thanks

Thanks for the help.. But like I previously said it's a totally custom loom not like the original one so connectors have changed etc..
Pretty much just need to figure out how the feild coil gets its power?

From a large scale 400f drawing, red to positive terminal, green is earthing to frame, yellows to rectifier to alternator, original regulator wiring is black (switched positive) to regulator, white ex regulator to exciter coil, green to earth.
nice bike,nothing in the bank

The standard Honda reg controle the voltage to the white wire of the field coil, that combined unit does not appear to bo that if the black connects to a switched power AND the white field as the field willbe full powered permanently.

This means unless that unit has a "shunt" style regulator dumping excess power to earth it aint gonna work and to my eye it simply isnt big enough to dissipate the heat involved in that

Just because they sell it, and import it from China probably, don't mean its gonna last long! if you can remember the size of the Zenner diode on the 70's Triumphs and the heat sink that was doing the job of "shunting" extra charge to ground.

I have seen combined units that alter the power to the field to alter output and personally I think that is a far better system, if you are into electronics I have, somewhere, a circuit diagram for such a unit, Steve had a 500 with Yamaha cast wheels that the builder designed the circuit for

I have the Rick's reg rec which has the same colours.

Red is constant 12v
Black is switched power
Green is ground.

I have been told that you can connect the green to the alternator green ground wire, but not sure how they would both be grounded then...

As far as I can see, the Electrex regulator (RR24) for your bike also has a white wire that goes to the field coil so I would say David Silver sent you the wrong one. Possibly!
