Cb 500 k1 with a k2 engine?
« on: February 23, 2021, 02:30:27 PM »
Hi guys I need some help. I'm new to the forum and always been in love with Honda bike, I found one 3 hours driving from where I live, the bike has 3 owner since new, the last one since 2004. He says he never has done any maintenance, only oil change every year.  Do you reckon this is a genuine bike.?I'm looking for a all original collector bike. The frame number is 2064030  the engine number is cb500e 2152699.
should the engine number start  with 1xxxxxxx.
THanks very much for your help. Regards.

Engines starting with a 1 are K0 not K1. It sounds very much like a very late K1 production model, 206 with a 215 number would be consistent with what Honda were doing at the time.

ok thanks, The bike was registered in 1975, 16000 km, you reckon that is the original engine?
I thought the engine serial shoul be   CB500E-2000001-.
regards

The answer is always the same: simply compare your engine- and framenumber to those listed in the first four pages of the CB500 Parts Lists. Only then you will know what exact model you have and for which market it was ment to go. You'll find these lists all here: http://www.honda4fun.com/materiale-documentazione-tecnica/parts-list/parts-list-cb500
For continental Europe this can help: Per l'identificazione del modello di CB500, consigliamo di consultare questa FAQ - CB500: differenze tra K0, K1 e K2. http://www.honda4fun.com/home/faq/generali/111-cb500-differenze-k0-k1-k2 You can thank your fellow Italians for this.

Thanks for your replies, so according to the file posted the bike should be a  k1 frame with a k2 engine.  or a very late K1 production model with a k2 engine serial.yes  I have noted the serian written by hand, but I know myself I will have a constant bug in my head "did I get a franken bike"? What do you guys recommend? Better look for another one?  Plus the current owner got the bike in 2004, never done any maintenance, so I guess it need some TLC, asking price is 6700 euros
regards

The European K2 is from: enginenumber 2166156 on, framenumber is from 2080001 on, so yours is a K1. That 'PG' on the license plate, is that Perugia?

"Plus the current owner got the bike in 2004, never done any maintenance"

"He says he never has done any maintenance, only oil change every year. "

It looks like it's been kept inside,  with oil change each year. This is a very good starting point as many of then don't have this. For more detailed inspection, that's only possible once you get it and ride it, but for the money it seems quite an original bike and worthwhile to buy.

Not even the factory have recoeds of what emgine went in which frame, only records of what frame mumbers eft the line on what day so nobody can tell you exactly what it should be only if it is in the "range' of correct numbers, which it is plus in 75 Honda were building 500K1 for UK and some or europe, 500K2for USA and other countries plus 550K0 for USA so it was a reall nightmare

CB500 Four: UK and European (some parts)

1971 VIN 10**** Engine 10****
1972 VIN 20**** Engine 20****
1973 VIN 20**** Engine 20**** to 21****
1974 VIN 20**** Engine 21****
1975 VIN 20**** Engine 21**** And i have seen a 22****

It is not a K2 engine it is just a K2 number in the USA plus some other countries, because the UK and most of europe did not have a K2 then, it is a CB500 K1 number  ;)

Engine 22***** was on the rare CB500K3 which had framenumbers from... 1000001 on. ;D ;D ;D As said: a nightmare.
BTW, well done!
