« on: March 10, 2010, 12:23:40 PM »
should one be up and the other down or both valves point up into  the barrels ? block is not fitting flush and wondered if on should be up (piston 1 side) and one pointing down (piston 4 side)

If you look into the dowel you will see one end of the restrictor is flat and the other is a small spigot---i think they are 750 ones pressed into the dowel. They fit with the flat  side up from memory but also i thought they had a stepped outer diameter and only went in one way round

indeed Tim, had to replace one and forgot which way round they go. according to the micro fiche the appear to go both the same way up into the barrels but when fitted the barrels wont sit flush down with the cases even with some gentle persuasion(!). tried reversing one and it fits but this would mean oil travel would be up from piston 1 side and pressurized down on piston 4 side(which in writing it i seem to have answered it ?

the oil flow up to the camshaft should be pressurized on both sides meaning the valves should be facing both up. perhaps some gentle honing is in order for the new valve

Is there anything left in the hole stopping the dowel going in all the way?

Does the oil restrictor not fit into the top of the barrel not underneath?

Both are pressurised feeds to the cam as the overflow just flows down the cam chain tunnel.

No Yoshi on the 500/550 the restrictors are a press fit in the crankcase/cylinder locating dowels as the oil path does not go up a stud as on the 750.

somewhere i have some NOS ones and if i can find them i will look at them

Here's a scan of the oil system from the Honda book.

Doesn't show the actual restrictors mind...

I must admit it must be over 28 years ago since I last had a 550 in bits, whereas the 750/823 was apart regularly where I remember always checking that the restrictors had nothing blocking them before bolting the head back into place.
