I am not an engineer, but sometimes you have to take a step back and look at the whole picture, i.e:- To reach the point that you have, a total stripdown which takes more than 5 minutes, would you honestly rebuild it with the existing shells and run the risk of having to tear it all apart again? It's a bit more involved than chancing your arm with using a spark plug for a second time.
Without wanting to harp on it, many years ago I worked part time in a car accessory shop, this was in the days of 'kerbside mechanics inc'. The number of times that customers would purchase a new clutch plate and cover but wouldn't bother with the release bearing! There's only so many times that you want to be lying on your back with a cast iron gearbox resting on your ribs.
