I like the chrome numer plate frame - is it a USA part or are they sold here in the UK?

Probably has different mounting holes so not a straight swap part ?

Hi Ted

Yes they are sold in the UK

Bolt pattern is the same as the rear mudguard but As you noticed it is for a USA bike so I did this to get the number plate to fit

Better than a rot painted black uk one

Best wishes Al

I so want a chrome rear number plate holder - are you saying it will fit my UK rear mudguard mounting holes as my existing mudguard is in good condition?

Hi Ted

Yes the four mounting holes for the mudguard are the same

It just the plate mounting is a different shape as it for an American plate

Best wishes Al

I've had a look online they are not cheap - made me wonder how much it would cost to chrome my standard black one. (probably way more)

I'll see how good the metal is when I strip it of paint.

Chrome is  not cheap

I think time you strip and chrome your original it will be way more than this

Other option if your original is in VGC would be to sell that one and then buy this one

Might even make a small profit as original one in VGC with no rot are I guess sought after by the CB anoraks

Will it fit the 500 then Ken? (as the 400 bracket is a different part number to the 500 on the CMSL schematic)

Yes it should be a straight swap over

This is what originally came off

And the chrome one went straight on using the same upper and lower bolt holes

Y'know, one of the few remaining pleasures we have in life is freedom of choice in many things. My personal preference would be to go for the contrasting effect of a high gloss black fitting attached to a well polished chrome mudguard, but it's your bike and I heartily defend your right to have it looking as best suits you.  Looking at the item pictured, it gives the effect of a reaction between two differing types of paint, but the metal seems to be fairly sound. If that's the case I would leave it soaking in  stripper and re-paint it gloss black. As somebody else commented, decent black ones are getting rare and this could well offset some of the cost of your replacement. Stay safe everyone.
