Plastigauge question

My new Plastigauge arrived yesterday - unlike my previous stuff its very brittle is this normal or is it dried out old stock?
Honda CB500 K1 (new pit dug out ready)

It's quite delicate stuff. Cut off a short piece and squash it flat on a hard surface to see if it works OK.

My last lot was like Plastacine by comparison!

Used it today on my mains and it works just fine even though it has the feel of thin spaghetti.
