Well at long last I now have a bike that runs as good as it looks ;D ;D
I only have myself to blame and thought I would document my stupidity so that others do not go down the same route as me. :-[
It turns out that the main jets have been drilled out at some point, as they all measure within a few thousands of an inch of each other. They were almost 3/32 in diameter ::) I did check they were the correct numbers on them but failed to check the actual hole itself against the old jets, they were from some kits I bought at an autojumble and just assumed they were correct.
So hard lesson learnt, and thanks for all the help from various members. One good thing has come out of this caper, I now have a more thorough understanding of the carburation and ignition systems which should make tracing any future troubles easier.

Once again a big thanks to all for assistance,

MartinH

The important thing is the learning curve, plus the satisfaction of knowing that you fixed it.
