72 rear rim

Anyone know where I might find a sound original 18” D.I.D rear rim. I thought I’d cracked it. Totally refurbed the hub, including new brake lining. Had the existing rim rechromed. Only for the wheel builder to inform me it has hairline cracks and is useless. Gutted! Lesson learned there for sure.

Apparently Julie......Hairline. I haven’t inspected it myself but the wheel builder is adamant they’re dangerous! Old age.....I know the feeling!

Well, how bloody strange. I've never know steel wheels to get hairline cracks, bends and buckles but not cracks. That is most weird.

I've seen them as the spoke nipple starts to pull the little "mole hill" form in towards the wheel centre and cracking up toward the hole such that you can't tension the wheel correctly.

Are you 100% sure he said the rim and not the hub eg brake lining. It's quite common to see the hub liner cracked and you may have misinterpreted what he was trying to convey.

Definitely the rim. The hubs 100% and it’s been relined, new bearings the lot. I’d waited an age to get it back from the Chromers. It’s doubly annoying because we checked them out to make sure they were true but didn’t register any cracks until they came back for fitting.
The whole idea of having a spare set of wheels has become a bit of a black hole!

Why do you need a spare set of wheels?

There’s no logic to it Julie. I inherited a set and it seemed like a good idea at the time....I probably need help.

I know I can get a repro but the originals have a different stamp so I’ll just have to keep an eye out.

You can't see the diamond stamp or any other stamp whilst your riding and nor can anyone else 😊😊😊😊 Safety over originality all the time, every time.

I've got one (and front) that I replaced with new DID during my 500k2 rebuild - needs rechrome but chrome quite good with clean off'able surface rust on inner side. I was going to put them on ebay but PM me an offer to see what we can do. See attached pictures. Sorry, can't give it as selling whats good enough to re-coup some rebuild costs.

We used to crack test wheel sets on underground trains using a magnetic flux. An electric current was then applied providing a magnetic field around the wheel. The metal particles were then drawn into the cracks if any existed, indicating the wheel was cracked and only fit for scrap. I'm not sure if you can apply this method to your wheels and if the chrome layer will affect the result in any way but I have seen DIY type kits available.
