We used to crack test wheel sets on underground trains using a magnetic flux. An electric current was then applied providing a magnetic field around the wheel. The metal particles were then drawn into the cracks if any existed, indicating the wheel was cracked and only fit for scrap. I'm not sure if you can apply this method to your wheels and if the chrome layer will affect the result in any way but I have seen DIY type kits available.

The science is sound Dave so I don’t see why it wouldn’t work. In this instance I’m in the hands of a pretty experienced wheel builder.  I’m looking forward to seeing it for myself and will definitely post a pic.

Another crack test used is Magnaflux

It’s a liquid I believe that you apply that penetrates microscopic cracks then once the excess fluid is “washed off” you  then inspect under a UV lamp as the fluid  in the crack remains and glows under a uv inspection lamp?
