Case bolts
« on: August 30, 2021, 06:52:15 PM »
Hi all

I have a question please

Has anybody replaced the M8 case bolts that clamp the main bearings together with head studs rather than using bolts

Just that when I was building my V8 rover it was highly recommend that as the engine was “tweaked”  I scrapped the head bolts and main bearing cap bolts  and replaced them with a stud and nut system  (ARP) as you get far more even clamping and is superiority to using a bolt system

Just that as my new engine will be a bit tweaked (460 cc /fast road cam plus other tweaks etc want to build a good bottom end    so make sense to go this way

Even on my RD, the area that clamps the crank in is as standard uses studs rather than using bolts

Any thoughts welcome

Best wishes Al

I will be very interested in the answer to this,

I always thought the Sohc bottom end is very over engineered,

And will accept over revving and increase in capacity with out any hassle.

Look forward to the answers

Yes I am looking forward to any advice hence the question

Was planning to replace the original bolts anyway as they are very rusted and for me any improvement “even if over engineered”makes sense to me and has no negative impact as you can get M8 nut in a 12mm A/F format so using a nut in the area where space is limited is no issue. And to change to this set up  is pennies compared with the other changes I would like to do

The original fastening system has been more than sound on my 460 yoshi with 1/2 race cam and 26mm Amal carbs., more important is a heavy duty cam chain and heavy duty clutch springs, I have revved to 12000 rpm with them.

Alan, why don't you contact 'Davis Motorsports' - they have successfully raced 500's at the classic TT and have an advice enquiry facility on their website. If anybody would know, I would say it would be them
