Crankcase - find or fix?
« on: July 13, 2004, 10:05:37 AM »
A while ago the conrod came away on my 1979 CB750F2 and shot through the upper half of the crankcase. I've finally got round to restoring her, and am now trying to either find a repacement crankcase, or get the hole welded up.

Does anyone know where I can get a crankcase or know of a weldor who's good with cast ally? (I can weld, but have only experience with MIG and arc on mild steel. Cast ally is a specialist job that ideally requires a TIG)

cheers,
fred

How big is the hole, and where is it? I've heard of cases where folks have repaired smallish holes by drilling out, tapping out a thread and sealing with a bolt.

Any specialist repair is going to cost a bomb.

I know of a guy that used that two part epoxy metal (JB Weld, I think it was called) - Not something I would try myself

There is a massive auto jumble coming up in Newark, Notts on August 22nd  and Sept 26th. I'm going to see what camshaft stuff I can get.

All that said, I may have a set of cases but I'm not sure what they are off, I bought a complete engine as an F1 a few years ago, but I've moved since then and I'm not sure what happened to them. I'll have a root around and get in touch.

Cheers Jonny,
The whole in question is quite ragged and is big enough to put a big fat finger through. There's also another inside the casing along the section for oil pressure. I think a fix-it is out of the question really.

I've managed to get hold of a bloke up in Northamptonshire who's got an old CB750 breaking for spares, and has an engine which is a runner. I'll hopefully be getting hold of that next week and it might, hopefully, be a case of just chucking that engine in the frame. Which would be nice.

What camshaft stuff are you after, as it seems that i may have two spare engines in bits now!
