My rear mudguard only has three holes for the rear number plate bracket I assume this isn't original as the grommets on the plate holder indicate four mounting points?

I can fit the unit by using the two upper rubber cushion mounts and the centre bolt hole on the bottom bracket as it was when I took it off.
Parts manual not much help as it appears to just show the upper mounts.

Is it for the USA model ?

My original Uk plater holder had four bolt holes and so did the rear mudguard as you can see in the below picture

Hope this helps

The US ones were chromed whereas the GB ones were painted black
Where's that 10mm socket got to?

If the holes are in a triangular formation Ted then the guard is most likely a USA one. I do have a US number plate bracket around somewhere. As said they are chrome instead of black.
Yes they are in a triangular formation I have a chrome US type rear bracket but that also has 4 mounting points. I'll just use the three bolts with a rubber cushion on the lower bolt. The chrome is quite good on the mudguard so it's definetly been replaced by a PO.

I'll post a pic of the 3 hole bracket I have, it's not too bad.

It's occured to me that I could just drill a couple of holes and put a nut on the back?

My rear guard is ratty and has filler in it so I want to replace it. It has 4 mounting holes for the number plate bracket, the 2 lower ones being on a raised "hump", then 2 holes forward where it mounts onto the frame. I thought I had found a replacement with the one pictured below, but now I can see it is perhaps one for the US market. Any ideas on where to find a replacement welcome, I have been looking for a while now, so far to no avail. 2 pics of my guard also attached.

That’s intriguing

The American chrome plated one I have fitted from this supplier has three holes in the bottom so it fits both the four hole and three hole mudguards

Yes I can confirm that mudguard is extremely tatty.

The 3 hole version that some American bikes got has the 3 holes quite close together but in a triangular pattern. The one Al posted a pic of is the 4 hole version, the 3 hole doesn’t get that forward stretching piece of metal with the 2 upper mounting holes.

I don’t think the 500 guard fits the 400 which is a shame as I have 3 or 4 decent ones including a NOS 3 hole version.

My original painted bracket has a centre hole so I'm going to drill it out a bit more to take a rubber mount  - the mudguard is too good to consider change never mind the cost. My spare chromed mount has no centre hole.

I got an mint rear mudguard and it came with the plastic part which I didn't need all for £68 from America and that was including import duties, it was the correct one with the 4 holes, I had to do a lot of searching but they come up now and again, totally transforms the rear end.

Nice rear fender you have there - what's with the chain guard - not chromed - is it a fully painted one ?

P.S. I've drilled out my mount and it fits a treat except I have no third collar insert - they seem to be unavailable.

Ted, Graham may have a spare insert, I'll ask him later.

If you could let me know where you got it from that would be great. I have found one at Bertrums, out of stock for £330. Then one in the USA for $49.66 delivered free to UK. If it looks too good to be true, it probably is, springs to mind:

That's cheaper than a rechrome on my existing one & it has the correct four mounting holes. Is the customs duty plus overseas postage  $150 extra ? ;D
