CB550 F2 1977 frame question......

Evening all,

As the previous owner has hacked off pretty much anything of use I have the envious task of trying to revert the frame to accepting standard foot pegs and brake levers etc etc.
Would anybody be able to send me some shots and 'dims' of where the tube needs to be welded to take the brake rod arm (the one that attaches to the pedal via the splines?)

He's hacked it off along with all the associated hanging points for the rear brake switch and wires so Im on this completely blind and the Fiche doesn't show much of any use via CMSNL.

Could I be dead cheeky and ask for diameter  of the tube, thickness of material and some reference points with which to start?

I'm not in a huge rush as still collecting parts for the build, (massive thanks to eight0 ,(Adam) who sent some goodies this morning),
I've managed to get the f/rests and brackets, headlight, torq arm, stopper rod, spring and all the associated 'gubbins' for the rear set up so just planning what I need to get to put it all as it should be again.

The front end is sorted with all the extra bits needed to do a twin disc set up, haven't looked at internals yet its purely a plan for things I can see that need sorting as it's still tucked away in the shed and I can only see the O/S. I'll look at the motor once shes out but I'm on for a full 'case refresh' and bearing replacement, if thats whats required.

I'm waiting on an air box to come from the states for the 400 and I need to find of someone who can make me a connecting tube for the exhaust and then, apart from a few bits and bobs, shes done so I'm trying to get ahead of the game ready for the dark evenings.


It's a weird thing but when I buy a new bike or project, I'm always really looking froward to a new load of information, which generally starts with a new (to me) Haynes Liar. Because the 400 on is the same as the 550, I kinda feel cheated for some reason.

When I finished the Ducati and got the 400 I was really chuffed with my new 400/4 book, weird I know, might be a hoarders thing having heaps of them on the shelf in the workshop or something?  :o
I hope its not a subconscious obsession to collect the whole set, I simply dont have the money for all those projects!!!!

Therear brake light switch bracket is still there just above the oil filler, i think it bolts onto the engine bolt on that model,its the 500 that has it welded to the frame.
Only got 500 frame about so cant give any dims sorry

Ehyup Bryan,
The rear light switch bracket thats on it is a bent bit of ally, cut badly and bolted to the frame with a screw fix generic m8.........I'm not 'aving that! ;D

I haven't  forgotten about the tank mate, just had zero free time at the weekends to get anything done. I WILL bell you mate. Soz!

I have a damaged/ empty F2 frame at home which I can photo/ measure from all angles. Won't be before the weekend....I might need a prod to remind me as I'm bound to forget.

Fabricating a seat latch will be a right mare? Assuming that was your intention?

Was it an F2 frame you were fixed on? I have a very good and straight F1 I’m willing to part with.

That's what I've been reading and discovering this morning. They're discontinued but I've found a few on the net and if worst case scenario, I'll have to make one but hopefully it will look a bit better than the one wound onto the frame currently!

I wasn't going to put it back to standard, it needs too much doing to it so I was hoping to modify and repair whats left to try and build something traditional. The seat catch I wasn't really bothered about as they re easy to make and fit once the rear frame rails are added and you've a starting point. I figured it was going to be a different seat when i bought it s can be seen in the pic.


Yes, that is a skateboard they've used for the seat base!................No really :o

Could be interested in the frame, drop me a pm if you've chance. I was not hoping to spend the earth on this one but I wont ignore investigating an opportunity as and when they arrive.

I wouldn't say I have my heart set on the F2 its just what was dealt and the whole thing found me really......as they do ::) I'm still happy to tackle this one but if your frame presents itself as a better option then I could well be right up for that Sesman.

Goes well with the expertly fitted pods on the carbs and the surgically 'cut and murdered' exhaust pipe!  I cant believe that somebody thought that looked cool????eeeeeessshhhh! :o

Most of what I need is there but there's heaps missing and some stuff that is just shagged and needs replacing. I'm looking at it as a blank canvass although due to budget and parts available including time and all the other things taken into account when tackling things like this, I have a rough thought of what I want out of the bike and what I can achieve in my current situation and it's probably going to be something like the enclosed if I can. Classic yet with some nice bits on and some improvements to get over the sh*te thats been slung at it.

I've all the lights now, wiring kit, motogadget m unit, indicators, and switches, just working my way down the bike gathering the gubbins I need to make a start. I've the engine to sort and get underway and whilst thats out for blasting etc I should be able to play with the frame and work out whats what. Like I mentioned earlier, I'm of the opinion that I might as well refresh the whole motor so its gonna be bearings, seals, o'rings and a fat order to Trig n Julie for some bits and bobs in the coming 6 weeks. The 400's nearly done so it'll be a move round in the shop and get her on the ramp. The Long Haired General has agreed that to give me a bit of room, I can put the 400 in the hall way for the winter.........nice!   What a great girl ;) 8)
