750 Gasket set.
« on: December 17, 2021, 01:58:15 PM »
I have had a lot of gasket sets over the years of differing quality. I am needing a set for a CB750K5 and was wondering what the best available set is at the moment, and is the head gasket from that set safe to use or do I need to scour the earth for a genuine one. Thanks.

Hello Roy,

Better to scour the earth if you want to do the job only once and do it right.
I bought a genuine Honda top set from a dealer in Germany for 200 euros, that was 5 years ago and 25,000 miles.

Thanks Phil. That DSS item is a base gasket not a head gasket.

Just a thought Phil, doesn't your K2 have a big bore kit fitted. Was the head gasket a Cometic item?

Good point Roy, another senior moment! - it has the gasket that came with the Cruzinimage 836 kit. It was the K6 Cafe Racer that I moved on that has the Vesrah head gasket on. I must still have the Vesrah head gaskets hung up in the shed (as also got 836 kit on the CR Rep).
You have a good memory Roy!
Did use a Cometic head gasket on a big bore kit I had on that Freddie Spencer Rep DOHC I used though.

I used a Cometic head gasket on my GS1000 as the NE one in the set didn't even fit. The NE gaskets in the 450 Bomber set all required trimming as well. That's really why I am asking the question about the best gasket set. There must be one out there that's perfect out of the box. What does Trigger use?

Roy, Change of subject - I have a Suzuki  valve depressing tool (like a C Spanner shape) for changing the shims for a GS1000 (from when I originally bought a new one in 1978). I also have 6 shims but not sure if they are Z1 or GS. The shims I have measure about 29.5mm.
If you can let me know what size the GS shims are, if the shims/tool are any good to you, let me know and you can have them.
I also have an original Z1 valve depressing tool (and if the shims aren''t GS shims they will be Z1 shims) - if they are any good to anyone, let me know.

Will check this afternoon Phil. I have a valve tool already but spare shims are always handy. Cheers.

Phil. My GS shims are 29.5mm and I think Z1 shims are 29mm. So it looks like they are GS items. A guy in my local VMCC has a GS550 and needs a valve tool, so can we take them off you. Will send a PM with my address. Let me know what we owe you. Cheers Roy.

OEM, Vesrah, NE Brand, in that order. We have used all types on customers engines, depending on what they request, with no issues at all. If the NE brand gaskets are too large, ie, stick out a bit when fitted, just trim the excess of if you wish, although on our own bikes that we have used them on, Trigger doesn't even shave them down, he just leaves them as they are. You will need to upgrade all the O rings on any of the kits as the gaskets are not the same thickness as Original OEM Honda ones.

Check DS Roy - as they listed a cheaper and a dearer set when I bought a set for my 500 - the dearer set was Vesrah. Would think they do the same for the 750?
