Electronic ignition with fixed advance.
« on: December 21, 2021, 10:59:17 PM »
Hi, I am puzzled slightly on refitting the dyna s electronic ignition that came with the bike, I noticed that there is a pin that the rotor slot locates onto along with the weight lobes that prevents the rotors returning to unadvanced position. I could easy remove it but it was probably put there for a reason. I can post pics but I actually stripped the unit and is sitting in thinners overnight because it was covered in some sort of grey paint overspray.

Does this help at all  - I have the Dynatek system - the mechanical advance mechanism is fully retained on mine - the electronic set up just replaces the points system.

Thanks Ted, that’s a very clear video on how to set up ignition system. This and other videos I have seen all retain the original advance mech. I don’t think mine is the original Part.

The other thing is the pin is preventing the rotor part seating properly. Should I remove the pin to have the advancer working as it should?

From their own information, Dyna S uses original bike factory advance and makes a point of stating that'll give no specification change from factory in that respect.  The trigger is magnetic in comparison to a "lumpy" cam with points, but should still advance and retard as usual as far as can  be seen from setup etc.

Looks like the pin obstruction isn't required to me. Boyer electronic for example specifically deletes the original advance retard mechanism for their fully electronic systems with that function handled internal and with switching logic entirely. It actually sets the ignition physically at full advance and pulls it back to retarded based on rpm register program within the unit, but nearly all other systems don't do this.

Thanks for your logic! There was nothing about this bike when I bought it that suggested there there had been anyone competent near it, so many bodges and defects, that’s why I have to question everything I’m not sure about and rely on the good knowledge of the good people of this forum. Cheers!

You are supposed to pull out the pin so Dyna's piece seats all the way down.
