I suspect that the original bolt thread is mullered and won't hold the Allen bolt in place so the cases and bolt were drilled through and the pin banged in. Mega bodgery of the worst kind.
The cam chain horseshoe must be stuck after all this time and almost certainly getting eaten by the cam chain. If it was my engine I would have to split the cases and investigate how much other bodgery is hidden inside.  :o

Hope you all had a good and safe and well Christmas. So with festivities over I ventured to the man cave, determined to resolve 1) Pesky oil leak and 2) the earlier mentioned cam chain tensioner bodge, see earlier picture.
I've no removed head and barrels and think I may have issue with the pistons! and valves or is this just old engine, never taken one apart before. seems a lot of carbon build up, is this the usual quantity. The bike ran fine with no blue smoke issues.
The oil leak was caused by a split rubber collar that goes around dowel on LHS but the one on the right is knackered also..
In my laymans opinion, or novice mechanic the bores, thank fully look really smooth with no gouges/scoring etc. The pics don't show it very well.
So whatdya all think. Haven't got to the offending bodge yet.!!!

I would say that is NOT excessive carbon for a bike used for short journeys.
Its impossible to tell bore/piston/ring wear from pictures.
Pistons and bores need accurate measuring tools to determine clearance and ring gaps need to be checked.
When that far down always change valve stem seals

The only carbon that looks excessive to me is maybe No3 piston my engine was low on compression resulting in poor cold first start - hence the reason for full strip & rebore. .

Cheers Bryan and Ted, not seen inside a working engine before so that's reassuring. 👍  Going to be a busy winter!

Finally getting down t o details on this "bodge", while clever it obviously ain't right.
It appears thread for cam chain tensioner adjuster bolt has been stripped or otherwise in it's past life.
Someone has inserted a tapped metal bush to receive an Allen bolt. What looked like a pin right through is in fact 2 pins either side holding in the bush.
So I guess remove bush and check sizes to see if the stainless adjuster I've seen used will fit.
Interesting bit of work though I thought.
