LED H4 replacement bulbs experiences anyone.
« on: March 15, 2022, 09:01:40 PM »
My none standard headlamp on my 400/4 is fitted with a fairly standard H4 halogen bulb in December 2020 I purchased a LED replacement from e-bay branded a Bevinsee unit @ £7.99.
Whilst doing my wiring it worked fine they are not polarity specific - after about 3 lots of 5 second testing it worked fine - now its dud - I've tested it directly to a battery its blown.
In the past I have bought quite a few from China for our old Jeep and had no issues.

All my clock dial LED's I bought from Classic Car leds they have been fine - I priced a H4 from them (currently out of stock) they are £30.32 each plus delivery probably. Have folk here used reliable cheaper sources for LED bulbs or do I bite the bullet for better quality ?

My experience with e-bay warranties on Ni-Cad batteries in the recent past has taught me they are worthless.

About 18 months ago Fitted a H4 LED instead of a Halogen,
Just to cut the wattage and see if the light was better,

Basically, the light was more diffused, not so good for serious night riding,
So returned to H4 halogen,

I find as long as the battery is ok,and you ride fairly briskly, it charges ok.

I did a review on an H4 LED conversion Ted, it's a sticky somewhere. Shows comparison shots between a Halogen H4 and an LED H4 using a Cibie Z beam headlight.

Have a read and make your mind up.

I can recommend the one below. Fantastic and the same beam pattern as a standard H4. Pricey at £33.00 but passed an MOT with it fitted and transformed the headlight on my CX500.

Link takes you to a bulb that is £65, that's inflation for you.

That's for a pair. Use the drop down box and select one and the price changes. 👍

As has been mentioned LED headlamp bulbs are now allowed as a retro fit as long as they meet certain requirements regarding dip cut off etc.

There are two options on the Classic Car LED website one being slightly more compact in design, the standard version looks very similar in design to the one in sye's link twenty-20 little difference in price between the two. Halfords do an even dearer version with a 5 year warranty.

On our old Jeep we had the fan cooled type of LED replacement as there was plenty of space in the light unit- I found the dip light beam fine - on full main beam they highlighted the limitations of the lenz design.
IMHO LED replacements are still evolving in terms of design, price & reliability - that said I do like the whiteness so am a convert.

I bought 2 of the bulbs Ted, ones in my Cb500 headlight and the other went into my CB1300 headlight, that's still going strong, no problems, nobody has flashed me about it being too bright or dazzling them. It's a really good output, not tried it on main beam yet as I haven't been out in the dark on country roads since fitting but I'd imagine it will perform extremely well.

Shame it's sold out, you need the compact version as there is not enough room in the bowl for a fan one. maybe wait until they come back into stock?

I use a Led H4 bulb from dynamo & regulator conversations. In my 750k1.
Absolutely fantastic light. I actually look forward to night riding. Where I'd dread it before.
I also have them in my Rd400, Tdr250, 250 Motorsport. All with excellent results. I bought some cheap Led H4 bulbs for my van, off ebay.
They were so bad, they were downright dangerous!
There are massive variations in quality. Buyer beware.
Buy cheap. Buy twice.
Sean.

I didn’t have much luck with the cheaper led ones and bought:
a Philips X-Treme H4 Moto bulb 12342XVBW for £10-12. Not perfect but not bad for night riding.

I've ordered the Twenty-20 one - shows as a 3 year warranty.
Tbh it looks very similar to the out of stock Classic Car item.
