Spring has sprung

I've just been doing a little assembly on my CB400F project. I've just fitted the centre stand and I noticed on the return spring that one loop is slightly longer than the other. I can't see any distinction in the assembly drawings. I'd be grateful if anyone could tell me where the longer loop is located , on the stand or on the 'L' shaped bracket. Many thanks Rob

This is not a definitive answer but I fitted mine with the longer loop connecting to the bottom of the stand.
Reasons were firstly I could fit the spring puller tool more easily in the larger loop and get the tool out, secondly the extra distance before the spring starts avoids contact of the spring with the stand bracket part where it fits.

That was my logic fwiw.

I think Ted is correct too ...it's called an extended loop spring. I reckon you can just about make out its orientation in the parts book.

Thank you good people. I've got the frame on it's back and I've just noticed something weird, it looks like the centre stand is bent slightly. The legs don't look level. So it'll have to come off again and I'll have to try and straighten it. Shame it's powder coated. Two steps forward, one back .

I share your pain when my frame came back from the powder coaters I noticed the right hand rear foot peg loop was slightly bent inwards. I was able to cold strighten it without breaking the powder coating layer. Not perfect but good enough sisually.

Of course, now I think one of the legs is bent, which one is the straight one and which is the bent one!

If it was on the bike one would hit the floor before the other, in that case it normally the other that's bent as they tend to get knocked back not forward.

Might be an idea to wait until the bike is on it's wheels and see if it's actually bent and not just an optical illusion.

Good call, I shall do that. At least for now, it will allow me to carry on with other 'stuff'.
