Its a shame to sell a bike you have put so much time and effort into restoring Paul but I understand that in order to move onto the next project something has to go to make space and to generate the funds for the next one :-\.
Thanks for posting the link to the rebuild thread, I have just spent an enjoyable 45 minutes reading all 18 pages, a great build.

Good luck with the same, although part of me wishes it NOT to sell so you have to keep it.

No, I'm currently talking with a compressor manufacturer to see what compressor would be most suitable.

He reckons belt drive is fine BUT it needs a dedicated 30amp supply as the motor cranks 6500watts at start up. I have heard of them running on a 15amp ring main though and my garage has a separate ring main on it. So I'd need to run a new line into the garage to be safe, that requires at least 6mm cable but I tend to over spec and use 10mm for safety and I have most of a roll left of that from when I did the shower.

The other alternative is direct drive BUT the reports on those aren't great, if the motor break that's it.

Also said you can only run both for 30 mins out of every hour, not great.

So petrol/diesel, would be best but £1300-1700 for one that would cope. Bit on the old expensive side.

I also have to sort out dust extraction by running a cyclone and hoover combined, then lights etc.

It's not as easy as it sounds and the space I require for it is still taken up by the chest freezer, once that's been replaced by an upright and moved indoors into the new extension I'll be good to go.

Oddjob. If you a final ring circuit to your garage and it’s wired in 2.5mm or 4mm cable just fuse up to 32A? What’s the actual motor size and starting method?

The garage has it's own ring main, wired in 2.5mm T&E. I could do a dedicated line in 10mm as I do have the wire available but I'd sooner not, the garage is at the farthest point from the fuse box. So lots of wire needed and having a solid concrete floor it means it has to go up to travel under the upstairs floorboards before coming down to pass through the outside wall, doable but not ideal.

As for motor size, don't know, all he said was "For belt drive we recommend a dedicated 30 or preferably 45 amp supply which will accommodate the motor starting current of 2 to 3 times the full load current of some 6,500 watts"

The direct drive is ok on household electrics though.

If the final ring circuit is wired in 2.5mm cables not surrounded by thermal insulation I’d just change to 32A protection. If the circuit is red protected you could even use a 32A mcb with type c trip characteristics, which will eliminate any tripping issues under starting. I’m curious as to why the circuit was originally 15A?

My mistake, it's the immersion heater that's on a 15 amp fuse, the ring mains are on Wylex B32 RCBs. Glad you pulled me up over that. I wouldn't mind but I wired the whole house years ago and forgot that. The house originally had 1 ring main and 7 plug sockets for the entire house. It now has 4 ring mains as the missus keep tripping the single one out, doesn't matter how many times you tell them, don't put the washer on and the iron and the kettle and the fire at the same time.

When I moved house in 2016, we discovered that the entire kitchen (gas cooker) was wired from a single spur from the back of the upstairs back bedroom…

In that case I’d say you will be fine. If the mcb trips on start just change to a C32RCB, if they are available. Did you mean an RCB or an MCB?. I’d only recommend going over to a C32 if you have RCD protection or can ensure the Circuit Zs doesn’t exceed the maximum permitted for a C32 breaker. Now buggering of to Electrical forum….

Oddjob,
Not sure if any interest but there's a really good forum on compressors and blasting etc. on the Mig welding forum - been following some threads for a while as I'd really like to do some home blasting but have all the usual electrical, space, cost problems to sort before jumping in.
Here's the link (hopefully)..

Cheers,
Andy
