Finding some footwear any pointers.
« on: April 25, 2022, 01:54:42 PM »
In my youth I just used some Tuff Boots when biking as proper gear was out of my budget.

I am wondering what type of boot to wear when riding my 400/4 I don't want Yeti sized boots something reasonably supple but I have two provisos.

1) My feet are Size 11 Extra Wide fitting shoes.

2) I have an issue with most synthetic linings so need leather or possible a breathable Gortex type interior.

I used to use my old Police Issue Technics all leather boots that had leather interiors but like a fool gave my last pair away!
Buying on the internet is not really an option so need to look for Brands stocked locally.

Advice sought please.

Ted,

Most manufacturers have a gore tex boot in their range, breathable, waterproof and comfy. You say you have wide feet so steer clear of the sportier SIDI range ( you probably will as they look like space boots) as they are a narrower fit than most. Alpinestars have the widest fit and the goretex ones are brlliant. I Think they were called black rain or something suitably catchy.

Have a look bud but I'd look at TCS, Alpine star, Furygan and Gearn. All have ample fat foot fitment and all last forever.
All my race boots are Alpinestars after wearing Sidi for years and the fit is awsome, generally you dont know you're wearing boots, they're that comfy.

Like anything mate, make sure they have ample protection over looks, a plate covering your angle bone at the bottom, shin protection, all that.yer know. Dont scrimp either, if they fit, buy em cos 'the fit' is everything, you wont need extra sock or this n that just pop em on and thats the fit, have a crouch and make sure you can flex your ankle etc etc.  Try everything on though, you never know, sometimes the cheapest is the right one!

Riding uncomfy is not good and very distracting..........just saying

I have a pair of Sidi anniversary boots, limited edition, needed to register to buy them. They are very space age to say the least, I call them my Judge Dread boots as they have a gold metal front plate.

Seeing as where you are, you might take a look at Altberg. Made in Yorkshire - don’t be fooled by the name.

All the cops wear them. All the ones that I know do anyway

Thanks for the replies gives me a starting point - funny how when I was looking online for local stockists it reminded me of an incident in the summer of 1997. At that time Wendy was working in London on Grosvenor Street in London renting a flat in North Finchley commuting home to Derby at weekends.

Ocassionally I would go to the flat on a mid-week rest day usually a Friday & stay the weekend in the flat. I had loaded Wendy's car up the weekend before with some suitable clothing as I was going to go down on my Yamaha.

I rode down on the Friday morning meeting Wendy near her workplace for lunch to collect her keys for the flat. I went back to the flat I changed out of my motorcycle gear only to find I had not packed any normal shoes so undaunted went out onto Edgware Road to look at some top end Hi-Fi during the afternoon. Wendy & I went out  for a Chinese that night, me with my boots on feeling very self conscious - my feet killing me.

On the Saturday morning I found a Clarkes Shoe Shop in London and bought myself a pair of shoes thinking they might have National prices - no chance in the Sale section it cost me £110 for a pair of shoes that were about £65 in Derby - my favourite shoe shops on the outskirts of London were all shut on a Saturday!

Went into my local ex-Honda Dealer now Royal Enfield to try on some boots.
First shock was when the long haired guy behind the counter said "Eyup Ted how you doing?" it was an ex-copper I worked with in the late 1970's.

After trying on about four different makes none that even began to fit over my foot - he went off & came back with a pair of Size 12 Daytonas - perfect fit so handed over about twice my original budget and came out of the shop a happy bunny.

Even nicer they were a Birthday present from Wendy. Parts arrived today so if its a tad warmer I will be sorting out the fuel pipe routing tomorrow.

I’ve worn Daytonas for years.
They never leak and last (almost) forever.

Apparently they will re-sole and repair any vintage boot but I only know of one guy who tried it and the cost was almost as much as a new pair…

I didnt even mention Daytona, thought they would be too pricey for what you wanted Ted. Superb boots and probably the best on the market for fit. Well done mate :)
