400 fuel pipe fitting does it need a clip at the carb end?
« on: April 26, 2022, 06:27:59 PM »
To cut a long story short I have had to do some re-routing of my fuel pipe from carbs to the tank as I was not happy with the in-line fuel filter arrangement.

My new pipe is a larger o/d with the right i/d it was a tight fit in between the carbs but I somehow managed to fit it after some fiddling to get it over the bulge part & fully down.
I can't get any sort of clip in place at the moment. (I did this with the air box etc still in place working from the top with the petrol tank removed.

Is it essential to fit a clip of some sort or is there a trick method of securing it if necessary?

Ideally a clip is icing on the cake,

But if the pipes are snug, don't bother,

Been thinking I might be able to drop a small cable down into position and give it some tension. 😊

Ted, why the in-line fuel filter? What’s it actually achieving other than grief wrt pipe routing?
As I recall there was little precious space routing the fuel line, and yep the book does show clips both ends plus of course the heat shield.

Would it not be easier to ditch the filter and perhaps source a lesser OD pipe for peace of mind?

Two reasons for the inline filter, firstly I can see the fuel flowing, secondly as my tank inside was pretty grotty inside  I thought an extra filter would be useful to keep muck out of the carbs..

I previously had it fitted between the centre of the carbs with a short pipe down to the carbs - looked neat but not very good access for replacement or cleaning.(90 deg filter)
Now plan to fit the pipe running from carbs via the bracket on the carb top using the heat shield spring - then fit the filter close to the tap with a short connection pipe.

The filter was nicely hidden before but when I had a small leak it was a pig to get at had to remove the tank - turned out the leak was just a loose bowl but by the time I had found it I had removed the pipe. I'm paranoid about dirt getting into the carbs as they are such a pig to re-fit not to mention the air intake box. When I rebuilt the bike it was so much easier to fit all that stuff with the rear mudguard & wheel out.

P.S. Although I have fitted a small cable tie I'm not 100% happy with it so will look again at pipe options or a clip that I can fit to the existing pipe.

I hear ya wrt removal of the carbs 😤.

Don’t know whether the same, but I too fitted an in-line filter in my FS1-E (don’t laugh) only to find that after several miles it would loose power at WOT. I couldn’t believe it’d be the IL Filter given the inlet / outlet diameters, plus miserly moped fuel flow - but it was.

I’d housed it within the crankcase carb area, and could only conclude heat and resulting vaporisation was the culprit as it was often full of foam rather than fuel.

So, I’m not a fan of such filters; but maybe it was a one-off.

You may be able to find one of these Ted in a suitable size

Called a "Herbie" clip. You can just push it over an installed pipe then ratchet it tight with pliers by squeezing.  To release, you just slide the tooth part sideways from each other for complete unclip and move it out of the way.

I have a few of those - the bulk at the end is a problem.

Today having fitted a cable tie previously to the carb end of the pipe decided I would pull it off an try again to get a clip on the end - it was so firmly in place it would not shift so decided that it was a snug fit and left as is.

Fitted the pipe spring over the pipe so it went to the very end between the carbs - no clip fitted to the carb top as the spring is around 12 mm o/d so the original hose clamp will not fit. Happy with how it looks - short pipe fitted between the tap & the in-line filter all just out of casual sight.

Petrol tank & seat back in place so if the sun is out tomorrow I will go for a longer ride - after I have checked the ignition timing dynamically. Looking forwards to a longer ride now I have the riding gear sorted!
