Ignition coils repaired - how to test?
« on: May 11, 2022, 09:02:47 PM »
So I have attempted to repair my ignition coils following the repair tutorial from Ash.
Is there an idiots guide (keep it simple for me please) how they can be tested please?

Select the 20kΩ scale. The secundary circuit of the coil itself, that is with plugcaps removed from the wires, should be between 14 and 15kΩ. Each plugcap should read 4-8kΩ. If you read zero, that cap is not the resistor type and then it makes sense to have resistor plugs because you need some resistance in the secundary circuit. It should be resistor plugs or resistor caps, not both. So in total the secundary cicuit will be between 24 and 31kΩ. BTW, for that you need the 200kΩ scale.
In daily practice, when one suspects malfunction, one could start to measure the secundary circuit in total by just pulling the caps from the plugs and then have one probe in cap #2 and the other in cap #3 and for the other in cap#1 and cap#4. As said, in total the secundary cicuit will be between 24 and 31kΩ. An individual cap's resistance should not be over 8 kΩ.
For the primary circuit, test the two thin wires. They're usually black/white and blue or yellow. Select low Ohm on your meter, usually indicated by 200. You should read between 4 and 5Ω.
The above is just a static test procedure. For testing dynamically, Ash knows how to make a test device.

Thanks delta rider.
Just to clarify please, when testing the ‘primary’ circuit do you put one lead on the black/ white cable and the other on either blue or yellow (depending on which coil s being tested).
Thanks.

Yessir. Select low Ohms, usually it's the position '200'.
