Had a proper hoot today at MIDS Salvage today. Jay, the owner used to be a rider for HRC in the 70’s and later went on to test for Suzuki in the tyre dept which stopped his career when a test front shredded at Laguna seca and he broke his neck. He was with Kevin Swantz at the time……….he limps about a bit now but as a result he invested in a building and 1500 bikes to break. I was there all day in the end and had a right giggle with them all.

Being a wet state, my hunting wasn’t as successful as expected but I think I got what I wanted. I was leaving and spotted a Tamiya model box on a shelf in the office and my jaw dropped. His late dad bought it at a garage sale of a guy who was stationed in Japan in the 70’s. His dad bought it in 1989 and paid $200 for it. It’s completely unopened with the plastic wrapper intact. It was made in 1971 I asked was he ever going to build it and he said he was probably going to sell it. He promised me first dibs

He then took me into his collection shed where he had every Honda model made in mint condition all done by his late dad. There were every model of the turbo CX’s, everything you could think of. Rotary Suzukis, H3’s, he even had some NR bits from the 80’s test bikes that he rode. What a guy.

As a result of his dad doing all these resto’s he has a massive stock of NOS parts that are all listed, he mentioned that if we need anything then get a list of part numbers sorted and he’ll check his stock. He regularly ships to the UK and he wraps them up and labels them as gifts to keep the costs to a min.

Might be worth sorting a joint list of bits folk need???

Absolutely amazing Roo who you bump into unexpectedly! Great story and obviously a real character much like your goodself👍.
I've had a similar experience a couple of times, you go to get something, get talking and the day is gone!
I went to see a chap called Miles who owned Morgo (they make the rotary oil pumps and 750 big bore conversion for old school Triumph twins), he was such an interesting guy I was there for 6 hours!
Glad you got the bits you wanted, I bet you back there before you leave the US even if it's just to buy the model kit!

I built that Tamiya kit back in the 70's when I was a student (it beat actually studying). I may even have its remains in the attic somewhere.

Also up there is an unbuilt Tamiya 1/12 scale Honda RA272 F1 car. Apparently Honda wouldn't provide drawings, so they descended on the car at an airport with tape measures and cameras. Released in the 70's it was a rarity when I bought it a few years ago on eBay, the box photo below is from one on sale for £225! Not to be confused with the 1/20 scale version they released later, I never got round to starting it mainly because I was intimidated by such challenges as measuring, cutting and fixing the 12 fuel lines and 12 plug leads, for a start.

I should either build it, or flog it before it gets chucked away as worthless junk after my demise.

That needs building that does, what a great thing! Ebay would snap yer hand off for that it must be worth a few quid Davo?  Love it!

The genuine spark plug spanner is rare these days, the box spanner may be depending on what size it is.

I need a No2 screwdriver bit for my tool kit if that's going spare.

Shame that 2 of the tool trays are missing the mesh holder but still worth picking up.

Have you checked the brake drum liner for cracking?

2 x 500 and 1 x 750 points covers in decent nick, nice.

Couple of starter motor covers as well, and here's you just bought one.

Always worth picking up a 550 air box, that'll sell.

Nice pair of mudguards but the problem I can see is how do you get all that home again, it must weigh a bit.

I bought the mudguards to cut down as the bits I want is the mount on the front and the last 9" of the rear so going to trim them here to a reasonable size, that should reduce the weight a bit. Screwdrivers yours Ken, my pleasure. He had boxes and boxes of original tool kits and loose items from them all up fr grabs and the Honda wallets they go in.  the plug spanner is the right one and although a bit rough will nanny up a treat.
I didnt get a chance to check the hub out as its stuck from being sat in a damp field but going to have a small fettle today to have a look. For 20 bucks I wasnt going to say no and worth it for the rear brake arm which isnt in too bad a condition so nothing lost nothing gained for the sake of $20. Ill let you know what horrors I find when I open it up.

I've never seen a collection of the weirder handlebars anywhere ranging from 'cow horns' to ape hangers on some of the bikes in the yard. It doesnt seem to matter what bike it is, they put these awful handlebars on them. Prt from looking bloody awful they must have handled like a jellyfish on rollerskates ;D ;D ;D

Indicators for Phil, 750 points cover for Roy and the rest is to hawk and keep. The air box is fpor me if I choose to use it, not decided as yet but thought it best to grab it whilst there. The weather has taken its toll on his stock and although the air box ids have the mesh missing thats the least of the worries, that can be sorted, at least theyre not disstorted through heat or anything else and fit. Some just fell apart in my hands. I had a right hunt on but a very good day and a potential for loads of NOS bits for those that need them after his revalation that he has a warehouse full of kit all in the original packaging. like I mentioned, might be worth putting together a mass parts list of nubers to send over to him to see what he can do. Its a huge place with about 20 guys all breaking bikes and doin stuff, really impressive.

He's very much worth staying in contact with and he was in huge admiration of what the forum does and our enthusiasm to the brand, so much so he kept knocking money off, he was bowled over when I showed him some of the bikes that we all have.

I'm back in a few weeks mate and I'll drop you a line. Im coming up to Yorkshire to see a pal briefly so might be on a huge parts run to go to Phil's in York with some indicators and Roys, over the hill to drop his bits in so could maybe sort yours out en route. Ive some riding time to catch up on.................going bonkers over here with no bike, its the longest Ive gone without for 20 years! :o

If you go again try and see about some 26mm box spanners, hard to find over here. And if they have some of the toolkit screwdrivers I'd like a couple of the crosshead ones, No2 and No3. Plug spanner as well if you see one and a wallet would be handy.

Wonder what sort of NOS bits he has?
