Camshaft lubrication
« on: June 19, 2022, 08:09:52 PM »
Having discovered a slight oil leak between the fins on my 500, I've taken the cam cover off to replace the 6 rubber sealing grommets as I suspect they are the culprits. Looking at cylinders 1&4 the cams run in an oil bath without drain holes, however cylinders 2&3 the oil bath has drain hole, so until the oil pressure comes up they are effectively running almost dry for a few seconds, until the oil bath fills up. I vaguely remember seeing a photo of two cylinder heads some time ago, one with drain holes and the other without. Would it be advisable/ beneficial  to tap a thread in the drain holes and put a screw in blocking the drain hole so the oil bath fills as cylinders 1&4 and letting the oil drain back down through the cam chain tunnel. ???

No. The early heads were designed that way and do their job perfectly.

As long as the correct grade and type of oil is used, changed at the proper intervals the head will be fine as Honda designed it, only ever seen wear on abused motors

Not sure what the issue is. The residual oil level should be even across the top of the head. (unless your bike is on the side stand) There is a wall between 1-2 and 3-4. The drain holes to the cam chain tunnel 2/3 are at and above the level of the aforementioned  walls. The camshaft bearing surfaces are above this level and really have to wait until the pressure comes up.
Or do you have a early head as these were different?
