Best way to mend broken stator wire?
« on: June 24, 2022, 12:23:00 PM »
Hey all

Two out of three wires in the stator harness has broken. What is the best way to mend these? Simple soldering, or is there a better way to go about it?

Also, went through my sealings today to make sure I got everything in order. I got 8 of these green ones, and I can’t for the life of me figure out where they go? Common Motor calls them valve seals, but when I look at CMS’ parts lists, they are now showcased on the valves.

Anyone with good ideas on both?

The Green silicone O rings are for under the valve guides. Only if you fitted new valve guides would you have used them.

Scrape varnish off solid copper and solder using leaded solder, insulatr with systofex of the correct diameter. Best to use new cable

What about the big lump on the wire? In the wiring diagram, it looks like some kind of coil? I can hardly solder it properly without replacing it?

The lump is the oroginal crimped connector which you have to cut out to get the "clean" copper winding.
You MUST scrape the insulating varnish off to solder to the copper

Alright, so just to get it completely right: The original is not soldered, but fastened with a crimped connector? Or is it both? Could I just use a crimped connector?

Okay, will do that then. Another quick thing - I noticed that most people secure the yellow wires to the coil with some string. Is that a specific string material, or will anything non electrical work? Would like to secure the wires so they don’t get stressed near the connection point like they previous were.

When I had to solder a new loom to my Z1 alternator, Ashimoto was able (and kind enough) to  provide me with little OEM solder coated springs which went over the tinned ends of the alternator and loom wires, then heated to melt the solder. There was more to it than that, ie which solder (lead based), plus heat shrink over the joints, but the final job was neat and hopefully permanent.

I used a cable tie to secure the wires, then everything got soaked in epoxy to keep it all rigid and insulated.
