550F2 DSS Wiring Harness
« on: July 24, 2022, 02:10:45 PM »
I've reached the point I've been dreading in my build and that is the wiring. Me and electrics should have a restraining order against each other, as it is, in my opinion the work of the devil.

However, I've come to install the loom today however I have a lot of wires which simply do not match the plethora of wiring diagrams I have.

The loom is a brand new one from David Silver Spares and I wondered if anybody else here had experienced the same problems? For example, the wiring diagrams state brown wires running to the tail lights, however the loom doesn't have a single brown wire in it anywhere. The loom also has an orange with black stripe wire, but this is not on any wiring diagram.

The old loom removed matches all the diagrams perfectly and I'm now feeling rather lost. I'll give DSS a call tomorrow to see if they can help but thought I would also reach out to you guys for any advice.

Cheers
Phil

Have you compared the old loom colours with the new ones from the front to the rear including any wiring spurs / clusters along the length?

DS looms are well known for using the wrong colour wires.

Sure there was a thread recently with the colours converted to the Honda ones.

They don't do a 550F though Ted.

The 550K won't fit, wrong harness.

I was lucky and found a NOS one for my 550F2, not 100% sure if I'll use it yet as the old harness is still in decent shape but until you try to use the old harness you can't be sure.

Hi Ted, yes I have, the old loom is spot on to the wiring diagrams but the new one is totally different with only a couple matching colours unfortunately.

Al does one for the F2.

Cheers Oddjob, I'll call DSS as I can't believe they advertise and sell these looms for this bike but are completely bloody different. Those ones from Alan's are rather pricey in comparison too but I suppose you get what you pay for.

If you can use a multimeter it can be sorted BUT long distance electrics is not easy!
You could bring it to Gloucester and i will sort it

Thanks that's really generous of you, I can use a multimeter no probs I think as I now realise that this DSS loom doesn't match I just wanted to rant that a company like that could be so half-assed about it. I mean if it said in the advert that it doesn't match oem I would of sourced another elsewhere. I just want the loom to match the original as it will make life so much easier for a newbie like me. I'll probably end up just sending it back and buying one from Al on here.

Hi Al, I can get some but I've installed it on the bike so might be hard for me to show it in any real detail. Looks like I will just have to buy one of yours instead. Its really grinding my gears this DS one, the advert even states and I quote:

'The highest quality reproduction wiring harness, a perfect replacement for the original which is no longer available from Honda.'

Utter bullish!t. I have my old original harness which I've been using as reference, however from years of classic car ownership I know how critical a good electrical system is so wanted it all new. What photos would you want?

Al, attached are photos of the DS headlight wiring, the centre loom for the switch gear, the taillight wiring and the fuse box block connector. All of which are totally different to stock.

Far too many insulation colour changes in the DSS loom
Red/white should be Green...frame earth
Green/blue---:---Brown/blue
Blue/white---:---Brown/white
& many other wire colours/connectors are in the wrong position?
