Finally took first ride on rebuilt engine
« on: July 31, 2022, 12:30:15 PM »
Hey all

Took a short ride on the rebuilt engine today. It started up instantly and runs and idles well on a bench sync. Oil is leaking from the oil pump (or shifter seal, although that is a new one) and I am hoping I just didn’t torque the pressure screw properly. It has completely new o-rings with the exception of the oil pump cover.

It got new primary chain, rubbers, bearings, piston rings, valves taken care of, new seals etc etc.

What is the best way to go about starting to ride a bike like this? Should I keep the RPM down for a certain time, should I not do long trips, when do I change the first oil etc?

  well done,

what ever you do ,don't "load" or slog the motor,

accelerate briskly, them shut the throttle,to slow,

this will help bed the rings in,

initially take it up to half throttle and 5K

  then 2/3rds and 6,5K

  let it spin,

  on hills go down gears,

 rev rather than slog

   enjoy

Wow well done Alex after all your ups & downs you must be well pleased.

I'm sure you will sort the oil leak - helps if you know the source.

Thank you! I’ve yet to take long trips. Have only done 20 km. so far. But it’s dripping oil from the pump, so gotta fix that before going out again. But man - feels very good to have gotten this far! Hoping an oil pump leak is the only thing I will have to deal with in a while 😊

Rev instead of loading - check!

I heard people retorque the head after a certain time to ensure no future leaks. Is there anything valid in this technique? And if yes, after how long a distance should I torque the head again?
