I wasn't knocking Bryan's method, it's just I felt like I was doing something wrong, I'll give a good read and tackle it in the morning,  when I'm less inclined to fling it across the workshop.

Yes I understand that (it's hard to convey sentiment on t'internet) and didn't mean to suggest otherwise. Just that others have gone through it and missed something which caught them out and ended up with slides too high overall. Certainly no offence taken from my side  :)

It's a routine that needs careful application but will definitely get you on correct path to be up and running straight away.

Suggest a final check after setting that may help with reassurance, hold them up to light and wind the idle screw to let the slides drop then see if they can close off the venturi completely (and so give zero idle effectively) before refitting to bike. That should give clear view of your adjustment before going further.

Hopefully there's not much twiddling to do to get them up to scratch.

I wrote that some time ago after messing it up myself and starting again from scratch
