Can you sucessfully powder coat pitted chromed parts.
« on: September 17, 2022, 10:47:37 AM »
With the current cost of re-chroming I did wonder if powder coating in chrome finish would be a reasonable alternative for none purists ?

Presumable the pitting would have to be removed somehow - I feel sure someone here will know.

straight answer is no. for them to remove pitting would mean polishing it out and the thickness would be compromized, and it never ends up smooth. but if youre not bothered about the pitting showing through, then go for it

I'm sure there are ways ......

I remember reading an article in an old Classic Mechanics mag, where they were fixing pitting in front mudguards before re-plating by basically filling the pits with lead.
You could plastic coat the thing .... provided whatever you use to fill the holes can stand the heat in the process and the coating adheres.

If the part is going to get replaced if you can;t fix it .... then that does leave space to experiment!

Recently had an old rusty pair of chrome engine bars powder coated.

They looked good but the slightest stone chip knocked lumps of coating off the size of your fingernail.

Probably all the chrome would have to be removed first to provide a good key for the powder coating?

It can be done Ted but outcomes are not reliable. All parts need to be reverse chromed before attempting covering with powder coat.

Depends how deep the pits are Ted. Also how thick the metal is. Get the chrome removed first and inspect and make a judgement then.
