That gear shift pattern reminded me of my old Renault Dauphine - IIRC it was a 4 speed H pattern but only a 3 speed floor shift gearbox so the usual position for 1st gear was reverse!

Just as I got used to the layout I rolled it end over end on a country lane - my fault I was late for work driving too fast when my nearside wheel struck a land drain slot - the lessons of youth eh....

My dads first car was a Renault Dauphine in 1964 Ted - Red (1962 ish) if I remember. We used to play rally car drivers (pretend as I was only 9!). Funny enough, I can't remember the gear change pattern

My dad had a Renault Dauphine too!  It would have been about 1964.

Although I was only six, I remember that he hated it. I remember the white HA Viva that he bought soon after - he stuck with Vauxhall for many years after that.

Drove a Scania 17 tonner for a while that had 9th and 10th gear changed round. 9th went back and 10th went forward when all the rest were in the standard position. Caught me out for ages.
Kids in a the back seat cause accidents.

The Dauphine was hopeless on corners - the back end  would hop when pushed too far on a bend,

The HA Viva was a great leap forwards of the era in so many areas - ride - performance - braking. I thought it could not be bettered until the HB came along - the HC was a bit of a damp squib.

We never had a car. My Dad would do 45 miles a day on 49cc. I was the family transport when I got a bigger bike at 17. Used to cart them around, on at at time of course and then there was the Reliant.........

He had an HB too. By the time the HC came along he’d gone to the dark side (Mazda)

My sister’s (first) fiancé was a Firenza guy but topped by my best man Paul who had a Magnum 2300.
110 bhp.
Ooohhhh.
