Wasn’t sure what it was, stacked with add ons though. I’ve heard good things about those, not really my thing but those that have them say they’re fab.

Decided to take the new Scoot for a trip South.
Been having brilliant weather like most, so Ferry and accommodation booked and it thrashed it down the day I was leaving - hey ho! I'm a big boy now and can cope with weather.  Anyway a lovely trip down via Altnaharra, Lairg, Dingwall, Achnasheen and on to my 3 nights in Lochcarron.  The adjustable screen is brilliant - up when it's raining, down when it ain't!

A short rest in Portree, Skye

A bit wet at Loch Glascarnoch - the water is usually overflowing the Dam

Still well impressed with it - feels like a proper bike when on the go and keeps up with (most) traffic yet still returned 96.2 mpg on the run.

John, the bike is a new 350 Honda Forza (actually 330cc) and is a belt drive CVT (like a DAF!) ABS and just 2 levers on the bars - left is rear brake (don't pull that like you would a clutch when coming to a stop!!), right is front brake.  Just start it up and twist the grip and you are away.  I've only had it a month or so and have done 1200 miles on it and have never been in the wrong gear yet!  All sorts of gizmos like USB socket and smart key ignition plus bluetooth.  Tons of space under the very comfy dual seat (enough for 2 full face lids) and I have a 35 litre top box.  There was a larger 'Smart' box option but didn't want to be locked out of everywhere if the battery was flat!  Wheels are 15 front, 14 rear - so not tiny and as I said it rides like something much larger. I've had GoldWings for 35 years and 118000 miles and this bike is impressive to say the least.  My Wife doesn't go on the bike any more so at 74, this suits me - I still have my classics for when the mood takes me.

Ian, can I ask a favour? A mate of mine has a wife recently diagnosed with terminal cancer, not sure if I've mentioned this before. Anyhow, she wants to keep riding for as long as possible but her health means he must buy a Goldwing due to the air suspension etc. He's now decided on the GL1800 after looking at some GL1500s for some time, he's going to look at one this weekend in Milford Haven but he knows next to nothing about them, what to look out for, what are the known problems etc. Can you let me know of anything he can look at specifically? I've mentioned about asking about cambelts and when they've been changed etc. The bikes done 48K and is a Y reg. This one in fact https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Honda-GL1800a-GoldWing-Black-2001-50-000-miles-Traxxion-Dynamics-suspension-/155615671310?mkcid=1&mkevt=1&_trksid=p4429486.m46890.l6249&mkrid=710-53481-19255-0&siteid=3&customid=link&campid=5336780572&toolid=20001

Let me know if you have any concerns so I can advise him, I've done a fair bit of work on the Wings over the years but only the 1000, 1100 and 1200 versions so I don't have any experience of the later models, I'd go with him but it's too far for me to travel these days without major medication.

Ken,
The 1800 has chain driven cams so no belt problems, but they still have slippers and tensioners.  Never heard of one breaking at that mileage though.  Many have done well in excess of 300k and the Yanks have some million milers!  The very first 1800s had a problem with a lower crossmember on the (alloy) frame breaking at a poor weld.  Some were re-welded under warranty but many stuck out for a complete new frame or 'buy back' from Honda.  Like all 20 year old machines, corrosion of electrical connections could be an issue (there's a lot of it!) but that one appears to be a 1 owner bike - or did I read that wrong?  Not sure what the suspension alteration was for - would be worth asking in view of your friend's Wife having problems.  I'm not in the GWOCGB (owners club) any more but it might be worth trying to find a member nearby to look at the bike - they might even know of it.

Bit partial to those Rothman paint jobs...
One day I'll have the time to restore it, not just talk and dream....
