More progress
« on: February 11, 2023, 03:47:14 PM »
Well it's up and running again on four!  I bunged on the set of 627s that came with the bike after doing the usual ultrasonic cleaning, rub n buff, zinc plating, new seals (thanks Julie!) and bench sync.  The new DS manifold rubbers were such a tight fit, I didn't even bother with clips and it fired up straight away on all four.  The carbs are coming off again very soon anyway as the correct 069s are nearly ready.  I wanted to be sure all was OK with the ones that came with the bike - just in case I decide to move them on sometime.  Now it's running again, I'll remove and tidy the cam cover and breather chamber, zinc plate the bolts and fittings then polish the rest of the tappet caps - I didn't want to remove it earlier and waste the two new (DS expensive) gaskets if it had needed serious remedial work.
Rev counter to finish, brake pedal spring to hook up, spare tank to fit then it's a ride up the drive and wait for the DVLA to give it a number - hope I live long enough!

Still on the lookout for an original silencer - wonder if scs has decided to sell his spare one yet?

Definitely a tidy looking bike - tbh I could live with the orange paintwork as is for a few seasons use - spend money on other bits first?

Ted,
It's staying shiny orange (who thinks these names up?) and the replacement tank is that colour - side panels left as bought.  Strangely enough our Honda Jazz is virtually the same colour, which we got in 2018.  Lots of comments about that being the same as Orkney Islands Council trucks - am I bovvered?

Yes Andy,
It's crap really and noisier than I would like plus the inlet is really small - with a very crude adaptor added, so would strangle it somewhat - something will turn up as Mr Micawber always said!

Look great already from 400 miles away, apart from that silencer, yuk. There is so much going on with 500s, 550s I can't keep up. What's wrong with that tank?

The original tank (still on in those pics) has a couple of pin-holes on the left side - possibly from ethanol over the years and there was quite an amount of rusty water under the fuel.  The actual base is very good but that left side (only) is weak. It has cleaned out very well. Could certainly have a piece let in but I came upon a cracker for the right money.

Yes the US has a long history on and off of ethanol in fuel. I wonder if that's why so many US bikes have crumbing carbs. How are yours?

Hi Phil,
Can't be certain about the carbs as the ones with the bike are 627s (500/4) but jetted correctly and they did have a small amount of corrosion on the usual main jet tube.  The 069s I got from a chap in Netherlands are absolutely fantastic and they are almost ready. I had the flexy camera in the original tank and it's just a strip of  terminal rust along the left hand inner face, a couple of inches up from the base, where it's been sitting on its side stand presumably.  As I say, a piece could easily be let in and brazed in place to make a good tank for someone but I was very lucky to get a really good one, so couldn't be arsed doing the original.  Now it runs well on all 4, I pulled the cam cover and breather chamber today to re-finish those and the cam, cam cover journals and rocker arms are still like new.
