Interesting experience with DVLA data market.
« on: March 25, 2023, 06:24:58 PM »
A while ago I tried to obtain details of my Honda CB400 previous owners via DVLA something I've done in the past on cars without problems.
I was advised that due to data protection laws I would not be given them.
Today I visited a local car supermarket as my 18 yr old Jeep is past it's best-by date. They did a valuation on my vehicle that tbh was more than I expected. I had a sit in a couple of motors as although I don't need a 4x4 I do need a high up one so that I climb up onto it rather then climb into.
On leaving I said I might return later in the week but no one had asked me my name or address. I was politely told they had my details via my VRM !
So it's okay for Private Car Park owners to get your data as well as  retail outlets.

Leaning against an open door Ted,
This whole GDPR (bloody expensive) fiasco is not to protect the likes of us.  You can now buy a vehicle from a dealer which could have easily been a hire car/driving school car/plod car or whatever and you have no way of contacting the last owner and as you say DVLA no longer give that stuff out for your interesting history file - even for a charge.
It's OK for gov.uk to take as many pics of me and my vehicles but would feel my collar if I did the same.
Then there is the cookie game where even though you have selected/rejected/accepted before, they keep asking you to do it again and then sell the info to third parties in many cases.

Grumpy old barsteward of Orkney!

........and don't get me started about Alexa!

I think it's probably an age thing Roo and although I don't make resolutions this is the year of the fight back - standing my ground wherever possible now.  If 'computa says no' then get someone in charge to make it say yes!

Not sure who Data Protection protects - certainly not victims in our case.

Derbyshire Police refused to disclose the name & address of the person who discharged the firework that set fire to our home in November 2017 despite interviewing the none local resident on tape.

Both myself & my insurers legal team were refused the details that would have led to us claiming for our insurance excess & some consequential uninsured costs of around £2k plus my insurers possibly making a successful  abrogated claim against a third party. The final claim paid out was over £190,000 plus VAT.

The person responsible was a guest at a distant residents firework party  - he also refused to give me the details to protect his "mate".
