I know they are 10mm thick Dave and need to be 28mm wide or at least big enough for a 28mm circle to be cut out of them, so offcuts could be ideal if they are big enough.

Max, what size of Vinton sheet would you need to make a few sets of these? I am asking because my brother in law owns a rubber company and he uses viton.
Cheers
Dave

30mm square and 10mm thick would be enough for the 400 clutches, not sure about the other SOHCs

Yeah but they’re latex, not rubber. Unless they’re the ‘Super Hammer’ 100% guaranteed ones

But yeah, typical Phil.

I've just called my BIL. When he answered he asked me why was I calling him in Sardinia!!! So I quickly said have a great holiday and I'll call you when you are back!
He's back next week so I'll call him then and let you know. I could have texted him with the question but in line with the recent posts on the subject I need to practice safe text!

Just took a 550 clutch basket apart Max, I have 4 or 5 and one was quite bad so I chose that one, one had a small amount of movement and the other 3 were fine.

A few questions if I can. I drilled the head off the rivet from the back, this allowed the metal plate to come off and that allowed the gear ring to be removed. I fully expected that what was left of the rivets would just knock through but they appear to be really well stuck in there. Was that the same with the 400? and if so what worked best for you.

The cush rubbers are not the same as the 400, similar but a different internal shape.

You reckon you could make some to suit? I want about 5 sets if you can.

Most of my rivets just tapped through with a centre punch and a bit of heat, I did have a stubborn basket which I had to drill about 3mm diameter most of the way through then put a small pin punch down and it moved quite easily after that.

Those rubbers look like they couldn't be made manually because of the funny shape, id say the best way would be laser or waterjet cut from a sheet. They do look a lot more like the modern clutch basket rubber shape Honda uses, maybe something already available might fit them?

They do look like the ones on that site Max, I'm not sure they're worth £60 odd though,

Let me know Dave, I may need some as well.

Removed the rivets from both clutch baskets, some needed drilling right through at 3mm and some just popped out after the basket was left in the sun for a few hours. Some need a lot of heat, all out now though and no damage done. Tapped one basket out to take 6mm screws, cleaned up both baskets, ring gears and plates, even cleaned the bronze bearing inside the basket. Looking really nice now. Ordered a countersink tool so I can countersink the metal plate to take the countersunk 6mm screws I'll be using.

I may have found a local company to do some waterjet cutting, will see how much they'll charge. Just need to source some 10mm Viton and I'll give it a go. The rubbers appear to be 28mm circular. Which may be ideal as my hole cutter set has a 28mm hole cutter in it.
