Im putting carb issues to one side for now while the weather is crap to get my grotty tank prepped ready for my attempt at a DIY respray.  This is where I'm going to ask you wise folk for your opinion on tank liners, my rather battle scarred tank has what appears to be a light brown liner which currently looks to be OK but as I'm doing a respray should I consider removing it?

I'm doing a full bare metal strip which has uncovered quite a bit of filler, I knew I would having run a magnet over it, the tank badge clips have been filled in so I think I might have to do the same for two reasons.  Firstly my badges were glued on with the pins cut off, secondly I the denting is mostly around the badge area so I think getting the clips to accept the badge pins will be nigh on impossible.  Any thoughts or opinions appreciated.

After having a liner fail for the first time in 10 + years, all I can advise is steer clear of the bloody things. Up until this point I was quite a fan but I wouldn’t go near it at all if I were you. Trying to get rid of ‘said’ failed liner took me over a month to be sure it was all out. The cleaning stuff is over a tenner a litre and I used nearly 10 litres and even then it’s not that great at shifting it. Steer clear Dom it’s a cock up in tin waiting to happen.

I've read acetone will remove them, might ginmve it a try before I start painting this thing, it seems pretty solid though so hopefully I'm not poking the bear as it were.

When I go to Newark Autojumble next week I am going to get a 5l tin of unbranded methylene chloride type paint stripper and chuck that in a tank I have with a liner in it. If that doesn't strip it I will give up !

I couldn't tell you what's in it Ash as there were no details at all on the lable and no data sheet. It worked but only after having it in the tank and turning it every day, for a month, during week four the liner only just started to soften. It doesn't dissove it, it just dislodges it from the tank so you end up with big chunks that come off but wont snap to be furkled out of the filler hole. Its a miserable job. It's obvious that frost buy it in bulk and decant it into gallon tins and do a cheap paper wrap lable............posted to you sir for about £60!

I used two tins in the end as its such vile stuff that |I found that there was a huge evaperation issue if the taknkwas left open and the filler not blocked up. It resembles walpaper paste like Nitromors used to be but with a different smell, not citrus based thats for sure.
So yes it did work, yes it was hugely expensive, no, nothing else |I tried came close and yes a horrible job deadling with proper nasty stuff in bottles that makes your eyes hurt even with glasses on ;  ;Dthat takes forever.

The respray has stalled a bit, after stripping the old paint I've been filling the many dents and trying to get the profiles correct but it's not am easy job to get it to feel flawless.  Anyway my workshop build has taken my attention for the last few weeks, the roof should be on come next weekend so I'll be able to relax and get back to project 550!

Still not much progress on this lately although I did pick up a spare tank complete with cap and fuel flap from Bridgend today, I got for a steal...I think!

I feel in itch to get into it again though with the sunshine we've had today.
