Well how about if you let go of a halyard and the weight of the rope on the other side of the pulley pulled it to the top of the mast for instance.
Lots of string up there and some instrument sensors, wind speed, direction, lights etc lots of things to go wrong.
The last time I went up a mast, the main sheet (rope) snagged on the Thames Sailing barge I was crewing on and I was 'nominated' to go up and free it off. That was 80ft up. We were sailing from Maldon to Pin Mill and this barge doesn't have an engine, so it had to be sorted.

This is one from Shotley Marina Julie? I used to sail out of nearby Felixstowe often on a container ship, and also from Parkstone Quay on the boat train to Hook of Holland as a passenger often. It sounds like you showed some girl power lol!  ;D

This is Mirosa, lives at Iron Wharf, Faversham. There is still a big group of Thames barges that sail the east coast, for pleasure these days, not working. I have been involved in some great barge races in the Medway on Barges but also smaller gaff rigged ketches etc. It was in a past life of mine and unfortunately, I don't sail now. Used to own my own yachts in the 80's and 90's but they were all modern and plastic. My house is full of boat pictures 😁😁😁. Luckily, Graham gets sea sick on a Paedlo, so if I ever need to do a bunk in a hurry, I'll be away on a Yacht 😂😂😂😂😂

Just in case anyone is interested there's a young guy who is renovating the 1927 Fastnet winner "Tally Ho". A Gaff Cutter.
Fantastic workmanship and a good film maker to fund it all.
Started 6 years ago and is now nearing completion.

Okay so how do you shimmy up that mast - looks like its carbon or alloy - no crows nest to take a breather then?

You are hauled up using halyards and winches with jammers closed, but not jammed. A Lot of trust required…

The Duracell Yacht refit is also very interesting, using contemporary construction techniques. The Tally Ho project is outstanding…..the craftsmanship is astounding.

Follow it on https://www.clipperroundtheworld.com/

I’m with ‘Team Greg”.

Starts September 3rd from Portsmouth .

Can't see a "team Greg" I must be missing something.  Are you actually doing a leg? Bigger balls than me if so.

Hope you have a fantastic trip and very glad you've avoided the southern ocean legs. Just too damn dangerous imho but maybe they are staying higher up than in previous races.

Wow, fantastic. In my dreams I'd love to be part of something like that but in reality, there is absolutely no way I have the stamina or energy to be of use to anyone.
