Oil change after rebuild?

Is it advisable to change the oil soon after a full engine rebuild or only when it has done a few hundred miles? I'd be interested to know thoughts on this.
(I was going to make sure there was oil pressure before starting up)
With all of the rebuild gunk etc etc, was wondering if it was a sensible precaution.....

Oil and filter change at 400-500 miles after rebuild.

Thinking about this recently in other context of wear and how it happens in engines, normal for 500/1000 mile interval from fresh rebuild, oil and filter.

Really useful i now feel, to use a magnet in sump (not only early running, but continous) and pull the sump at 1000 miles to see what you get in there and on the magnet.

I always use graphite type grease/ product on cam and followers, crank shells etc putting anything together.  All "plain" bearing faces in other words.

Hopefully you get a clean sump with minimal outwash of any component to start its new life.

I agree with Julie with just one caveat - if like me you have only done 250 miles in over a year then I would do one after 12 or 18 months anyway - great peace of mind when the magnetic sump plug looks devoid of metal.

I normally change the oil and filter after around 200 miles as well as pulling the sump to check the oil pump strainer gauze is spotless.


I'm sort of obsessed with cleanliness in those engines, remnants of crankcase gasket sealer etc floating around can block the camshaft oilway jets and cause disaster.

I use one of these https://creedsdirect.co.uk/p/5ltr-stainless-steel-mixing-bowl/ to drain oil into, has a nice pouring lip, dont you just love a "nice pourer" to empty through a funnel back into the oil container.

Very easy to look through the oil remnants with a torch when the dregs are left in the bottom.  Ordinarily nothing to report 

I didn't pay that for it, £1.00 at a car boot sale  also I buy those stainless tray that have separate compartment for nuts and nibbles from the 1970s, very Abigail's party type, home counties paraphernalia  these ideal for stripping carbs etc and keep all the bits in order while job is ongoing.

Did have one of those oil can with drain on top devices, but when usung the oil to start a bonfire had left it propped up in the fire structure, forgot all about it and only remembered when I went to get it for next oil change

We have an Asian shop locally that sells those big SS bowls in amongst the pots & pans section for well under a tenner. I use them mainly as dog water bowls.

Yeah, they used to work for me  but tend to used them for degreasing jobs......
