Found some casing dowels, 3 of them

I also found some 6 x 10 solid dowels but they ain't from the casing, they are the pins used in the 500 gearbox selector forks, the ones which run in the grooves of the selector drum. The only difference I can spot is that the genuine dowel pins have a slight chamfer on the edges, most likely to help them locate. You could file those onto the new ones easily.

I'll put them in the box.

Thanks Ken!

Don't forget to remove the orings at the base of the liners Dom, before you put the barrels in the oven. Then of course, don't forget to fit new ones after the work is complete. New liners in the freezer, pop out old ones when the barrels are hot and knock the new ones in with a block of wood until they are flat. Make sure the top hat groove in the barrels is clean when you knock out the old ones, for some reason they collect crap which leaks down past the lip.

You're supposed to have the head skimmed after fitting new liners, just to make sure they are flat. I'm not saying it's needed, never done liners myself, yet anyway. So long as they are flat they may e fine, maybe a straight edge across the surface will show whether they are or not.

Before putting barrels in the oven, make sure they are clean as possible or you'll make a lot of fumes which don't smell that nice. Don't ask me how I know that  :D :D

Graham always skims after changing liners.

He may do but that doesn’t mean it’s needed. It could be just a precaution.

I've swapped over the liners having given the empty barrels a good clean up of the tiny amount of crud that had formed around the lip, really not much.  Unfortunately the the two liners ones don't sit flush with the barrels being slightly raised, I gave them a good tap home while hot with a block of softwood and hammer, could hear they mack a positive contact.  Looks like a skim is needed😖

Maybe the barrels have been skimmed before and that would make the new liners sit proud. Ask them to take the minimum off, just enough to make the liners flush. Also get it done before having the bores done as it might make the barrels sit skew on the boring table.

Tried them Ken, still not got back to me, several other places aren't interested in doing the job.  Only place so far said £30‐130 and wouldn't commit. Tearing my hair out a bit now

You need to find someone with a surface grinder Dom as its steel they will be skimming, unlike a normal head skim which is alloy.

Ah I wasn't aware of that side of things, that might make it interesting.  For now I'm occupied trying to get the dowels back out

I've tried baking the barrels and slipping a drill bit into the dowel so it doesn't crush while I grip it but it's having none of it.  I will not be beaten however.
