I didn't back them off, didn't want to risk it. Some were nearly loose anyway. Appears to have taken a retorque okay though.

I think i noted that if they are already loose, ie obviously not holding torque, then you'd just go at them in sequence to retighten.

If they appeared to hold original torque but you weren't sure, then loosen and tighten individually to establish accurate setting would be how I'd go at them.

It does sound like the head gasket has compressed to compromise the joint here though, from the description.
