Rear mudguard/fender wiring harness.

Morning. I am in the process of derusting and treating my rear mudguard and have removed the original wiring harness that runs under the mudguard. My question is, does anyone know is it possible to purchase a new wiring harness ( the one that runs under the mudguard) rather than a complete harness for the whole bike? It seems the ideal time to change it?

If I'm not mistaken, the only wires running under the mudguard are to the rear light fitting, and these are connected to the main harness with bullet connectors. It would possibly be cheaper and easier to purchase the relevant coloured wire, connectors, and some sleeving and make it a DIY job. Don't forget to use a piece of string to tie the wires together, then use it to pull them through the channel under the guard.

Thanks for your replies guys. I know less than Zilch about wiring although would like to have a go. Where would I buy the wiring and connectors etc? I guess I would need to get hold of a crimping tool?

You do not need a crimping tool I use pliers then solder the joint for what I think is s stronger joint than crimping especially if you have to unplug the connectors.
Kojaycat do the correct diameter connectors, I buy batches of wiring either from a loocal electrical shop or for specific colours try e-bay or link below. I tend to order more than I need so I have stock for future projects.

I ended up making a new mini harness for the horn as well as some of the replacement indicator earths.

Thanks for the info Ted. How do I tell what gauge/ ampage I need and I’m embarrassed to say I don’t know how to solder!

I always tend to have my wiring on the heavier than needed side so I tend to use use multi stranded copper wire either 0.75 or 1.0 though you can safely go thinner as the ampage is low even lower if you fit LED bulbs.

Important thing with soldering  is cleanliness, I still use leaded multicore solder - these days its lead free I believe. Lots on Utube  on how to solder -easy to practice first until you learn how much solder you need to feed into a closed joint. I use a solder gun rather than an Iron it's personal choice though I have both.

I use a small multi jointed work stand with clips on to hold everything in place to avoid burns - like this mine is decades old

Ken, I don't think the harness in the link is a straight fit for the 400. The green wire should have female spade and not a female bullet. Also not that it would stop it working, the 400 is a brown wire not a brown / white. Having said that, a minor mod and it will do the job.

These are the three wires that make up the sub harness. The green is a spade not a bullet. Price of the green/yellow is ridiculous.
