None of my throttle cables have a rubber or plastic bellows type arrangement either on my 400 or 500, I believe the cable on my 400 was original it did not have a spring at the bottom- is it some sort of heat resitant cover over the outer cable sheath or have you actually seen a spring between the cable adjuster & the outer sleeve?

Yes I have got about five of them with a spring on plus if you look at the DS image of the push cable it has that protection  spring on.

So it's like a heat shield on the petrol pipe but for the throttle cable.

Are they “bending radius restrictor” springs?

Yes I figure so Steve. But none of the modern replacements including the late Honda ones have a spring on the 'A'  pull cable. So back to my question did the originals have the spring on the pull cable .. I seem to recall they did and the parts book illustration certainly shows one.

When all else fails Ash, read the manual !   :D

My '77 model has the spring on the cable.  Had the bike since new and it's the original cable.

Interesting concept - as the outer cable is pretty strong they would need to be pretty stiff springs to restrict the curve.

These were on mine and I’m assuming they’re original. Are they to prevent kinking?

Makes me wonder why Honda stopped fitting them, cost or did they simply improve the specification of the outer cable?

Hard to say whether the specification has been improved without comparing side by side but the cables are definitely much stiffer in that region
