Starter motor won't turn engine

(1/2) > >>

philward:
Hi Guys, just getting bikes ready for sale and 750K2 won't turn motor enough to crank engine to start - cranks slowly and progressively slows (starts first kick on kickstarter). Battery at 12.6v but when cranking (with kill switch off), only 4.5 to 5 volt. Battery is a Motobatt thats 4 or 5 years old.
Only other thing of note is I refurbed starter clutch recently - motor worked fine after fitting Toutmax kit. (didn't disconnect any wiring while doing this to avoid any connection issues). Starter solinoid only stops working (clicks) when battery decreases to 4.5 volts
Does this indicate a duff battery (before I buy new battery)

If you have a car I would try a set of jump leads but not with the car engine running.
If it cranks over normally then it's probably your battery.
I have a spare car battery that I use as a slave.
I'm assuming you have a good earth from battery to engine and good connections at the solenoid.

Thanks Ted, should have thought about that - I've got a spare good battery of my old Jag

Sounds like the battery to me Phil. But as Ted says , substitution with another battery will confirm.
Good to hear from you ...hope you are doing OK.

It goes without saying so I will say it make sure it's charged up first if not checked for a while.

My slave battery is 7 year old cheap at the time Hankook battery 100 Ah with 850 cca for a diesel Jeep , a bit of an overkill - it works a treat. It still reads 12.6 volts at the terminals a couple of months since I charged it up.
