500 Speedometer Cable Lubricant question?

(1/1)

McCabe-Thiele (Ted):
On my 400 it was a new speedometer cable so fitted it as it came - I've pulled out the inner cable on my 500 as it looks a bit mucky . I wiped it down with some WD40 type spray it appears to be a relatively new cable judging by the outer cable condition.

Probably an aftermarket cable as the end where it fits the wheel drive unit is plastic.

What is the best lubricant to use as I suspect grease will be far too thick?
I do not want to risk anything reaching into my restored clocks either.

deltarider:
Lithium grease. When I acquired my bike in 1980, it had 'nervous' needles, both tach and speed. Took the inner cables out, cleaned them with petroleum and lubed them with Duckham's lithium grease (keenol?). Never had to do it again in the 44 years thereafter.

McCabe-Thiele (Ted):
Thanks DR this confirms some online searches I made, I always prefer recommendations from a member as online can be product sales driven imho.

mickwinf:
Avoid the last few inches nearest to speedo
