Headlight Mounting?
« on: July 09, 2024, 06:53:29 PM »
I have received the replacement sealed unit from DS today for my 550 headlamp. However, there are mounting lugs on the old one that are not present on the replacement (see picture). When I look at the parts books it looks as if there should be a separate ring with these lugs on that fits from the back and marries up with a different one from the front which sandwich together the sealed unit and then small bolts/screws fix this onto the headlamp unit chrome rim. Im not sure why what I have is different but it doesn't seem to reflect any of the assemblies in the parts book. The pictures unit is all pressed together and does not come apart.

It looks as if I order the parts in the link below that will allow me to fit the new sealed unit into the headlamp and I get  shiny new outer rim into the bargain (which I don't need) but Im now concerned that the headlamp bucket might be different too.

Can anyone give me any advice as to what a good solution would be?

Your sealed beam unit will have three lugs moulded into the glass rim.
This is a feature of standard 7" headlamps of that size they fit into the rim kit.
Not sure about your front side lamp arrangement - does the sealed unit have a side lamp window?

Thanks Ted, I am happy to do away with the side lamp, there is no aperture in the DS sealed unit but as you say there are 3 small tangs on it. I checked the UK 550 parts at DS and there is this kit which I guess is what I need: https://www.davidsilverspares.co.uk/CB550F1-SUPER-SPORT-1976/part_28907/

Strangely this kit is not listed in the DS site for the US 550K; mine is a US import so I was searching the US parts listing.

I fitted a standard 7" LED headlamp unit designed for old Land Rovers - they have a built in Halo sidelamp.
On my 400 I fitted a small LED sidelamp between the lower part of the forks to work as a DTRL - now sports a 500 headlamp as above.

Not for purists.

That's the rim kit I used.

The DS rim kit is a standard unit for standard 7" inch headlamp units.
You can fit a sealed beam, LED, unit or glass with metal reflector unit. On none sealed beam types there is a metal type lug to match the glass ones on a sealed beam type unit
Might be worth checking that the 500/550 units all use the same headlamp bowl.

They do Ted, technicaly a front sidelight is a legal requirement but as you dont need an mot most plods wont knw that.
As Ted says all the reflectors, including H4 will fit and not sure there is any difference with rim kits between counries without checking parts list

Thanks for the help guys; correct parts ordered and as I am going the non-purist route I can add a pilot light between the forks if Im feeling super conscious.
