A trip 'darn sarf'

Well unfortunately we had to go down from home in Orkney to a funeral of a great mate in Hull who we've known for over 50 years.  Every cloud has a silver lining though and apart from visiting a few relatives and friends (naturally reducing in number as the years go by) a good friend and I managed a trip to see Ash - a very well respected forum member and after a well needed brew and a right good yarn, we had a chance to see just a fraction of his excellent collection and progress with his many projects - many thanks Ash, top man! and for the donated mudguard stay!

That's what I like most about this forum, the people.
You make friends just via posting and when you meet the same people in real life you feel as though you have known them for years. When I met Nurse Julie, Trigger and Nigel at Crich a few years ago I felt part of a family. Same with meeting Ash at the DSS 400/4 event (I didn't get the chance to buy a £10 used poster at the time.......another thread!) I felt as though I'd known him for ages because of his posts and as a result of a parts exchange scheme we had going on at the time.
There are a lot of people I would personally like to meet someday, Bryan, Ken (very much missed), Ted, Laverdaroo (nearly met him once, at the same show but logistics kept messing it up!), John and many, many more. Maybe if there's a show in the middle of the country some day (like Ruislip😁) organised by the SOHC Forum it would be a good chance to meet up and put faces to names and especially if we were to wear our forum names as badges ! Can you imagine all the old bikes turning up, that would be a great sight.

it would be nice to have a gathering to meet other members and see each others bikes in the flesh.

Over in Germany they have a CB Four club and do an annual get together.

I know what you mean Dave, we are an eclectic mix of enthusiasts, I've met Roo as he delivered my 500 from Bryan. Wendy & I got on with Roo like a house on fire even though he must have been going through hell with his teeth. I think I met four members at Crich show then another three from buying or selling some parts.

I like the badges idea, shades of Dame Edna Everage Show.

Some lovely bikes in there...a good few modified and also non sohc too. I've always liked the CB350 frame...it's like a mini-Harris or Spondin; and the Eckhart is unusual - looks like the Munch Mammoth from the rear piccies.

Central meet-up sounds good. It's always a challenge to find a spot that suits everyone. Hertford is quite central 🙂. Might motivate me to get an MOT ( I've recently been distracted by my old GSXR which has become my new project)!

Great to see you both on Friday Ian and thanks for the advice on machining the split pin holes in the CB92 sprocket damper bolts I am making on my lathe... all done now ... they just need zinc plating. A set of 4 of these from CMS costs £150 plus shipping, so well worth me making them, even though I am a bit of a novice on the lathe.
Item #22 in the diagram. These bikes are real money pits if you are not careful and I have two of them for my sins, a rare 1961 model and an even rarer 1960.

I forgot to tell you that an old workmate of mine has owned a Lotus Elan since I first got to know him in 1977 and finally started restoring it after being off the road almost all of the time I have known him. Didn't you have one?  He had it repainted in Lincolnshire somewhere. Recently though he bought an Elan Plus2 130 5 speed (Austin Maxi gearbox) which was owned by a club member who sadly passed away.

Here's hoping and praying your journey back to Oban was OK in the horrid weather we have at the moment.

Hi Ash,
A wet and windy drive from Hull to Perth - A66 closed so just pressed on up the A1 then over the Bridge and on to Perth.  Good night’s kip and a lovely sunny but cold drive through the Highlands.  An hour or so to go then we are on the ferry back to civilisation in Orkney 😎
Yes, we did have an Elan Plus 2 (4speed) which also came from Dave Willingham - I’d forgotten that one, so the total number of write-offs I got from him is now 35!
