CB500 K0 Wiring Harness Routing
« on: February 01, 2025, 10:32:15 AM »
As in title where should the main wiring route from the main frame near the coils to to the headlight? Should it go under the the lower fork yoke/triple tree as that's where the steering lock is? I know there is a cable routing guide on this website but I can't find it now 🙈

I put mine above the lower triple tree, not sure if it’s correct but fits perfectly.

Are you above or below the tank mounting rubber?

Does this help, it's out of the 500/550 manual?

Yes that's what I couldn't find!

I guess my question is does it still take the route under the triple tree if its the model with the steering lock under there?

Mine is like in the diagram, main loom passes under the tank rubber then goes back up going in between the top and botton steering yokes if that the right terminolgy. IIRC I added a 400 type wiring clip that goes under the left tank rubber, can't be sure there was not one there before.

I see that as going under the bottom yoke?

You are right,  yes it does (though the picture is not very clear), my frame did not have that side clip shown in the diagram as I have no fork ears, my loom dangled down really low before I stripped it down, I had a spare 400 clip so I used that as an alternative.

So now I'm thinking under the bottom yoke but clipped up out the way of the steering lock?

There is a large clip which bolts to the underside of the bottom yoke using those unused 8mm bolt holes you'll find under there. It was fitted to the 550F as the harness was found to be cracking around the headstock area and it was fitted to relieve the stress the harness was being put under in that area. I fitted it to my 500 as soon as I found one.

Part number 32123-390-000

Never seen that clip fitted to a 500. That's for the tank mount as it's chamferred for the shape the tank mount stud has. The 500 has a clip which goes on the tank mount to support the wiring harness, part number 32171-323-000

That's NOT a 500 wiring/cable layout, the 500 wires run inside the bars so why the cable clips? It also has no clutch sensor wiring, that's for the 550K3 wiring by the look of it as that does have wires outside the bars.

Definitely goes quite a bit below the tank mount on the LHS. And then straight to the headlamp shell. Not a great design as the flex turning the bars put stress. Only bit that needed work on my K0 as the sleeving had become hard (Colorado weather) and cracked. The later 550s with the clip and bolt is better, but a 500 loom may not be long enough.
This is the best I can find.

500 workshop manual pic 272 shows it running outside the r/h coil, then being clipped to the frame downpipe, however if you move it up and use the tank mount clip and then clip it higher on the frame downpipe that should relieve some of the stress as the bars turn. That's how Honda routed the 550 harness. Page 167 of the 550 appendum. If the harness proves to be too short on the 500 to bolt it to the underside of the bottom yoke then just send it around the headstock instead.

Yes I think this is how mine should be. like yours the outer sleeving has gone rock hard on mine. So hard that when I tried to cut it off it shattered! The PO had bodged it by taping the outer sleeving up at the main flex point as it had cracked through there. I think it had been put above the tank mount on the frame as it was so hard it wouldn't really go anywhere else.

Anyhow I've got the old hard stuff off and plan on replacing it with this and routing it below the tank mount
