What model of cb500
« on: March 01, 2011, 04:06:14 PM »
I have just bought a cb500 four as my first project bike and need to know the actual model I have. The bike has an engine number that starts with CB500E 10 which is k0 according to this site but the frame starts with CB500 20 which is k1 is this normal or do I have an engine from a different bike in my frame?

I posted this over on sohc4.net before realising there was a uk only forum. They reckon that it's normal for these bikes to have mismatched engines and frames and I shouldn't worry. Is this something anyone else has encountered? I dont have any history on the bike as the PO says it's a barn find so any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Mine's the other way around. 1015277 frame with a 2154987 engine.

I don't think it makes much difference really as there were very few changes in the short life of this model. The 550 had all the "upgrades"  :)

Welcome to the UK by the way. Smaller (but more perfectly formed) than our colonial brothers.

Cool thanks for clearing that up was just worried that when it comes to getting it put back on the road I might have some problems.

Somebody has swapped the engine at some time. Do the numbers match the V5?

The numbers march the ones in the v5 but it doesn't tell you the exact model- the v5 also states the colour is green but it did have the gold almost metalflake looking paint under it before I took it back to bare metal.

New frames come unumbered and have the original re-stamped into them, frame numbers starting 10 ran untill 11/71 then the 20 started in 12/71.

Is this declared as an initial used overseas model I.E. an "Import" on the V5 as it's very common to find a US model with a later engine.

As long as all the numbers tally with the V5 just enjoy it, there are very few modifications during the run of 500 engines(mostly in the first 6 months) and frames so parts will not be a problem unless you are extremely unlucky

not too sure on mine as the engine stamp has the last 3-4 digits missing, I can partially make them out  :(

hey Popwud, you wouldn't happen to be the same guy that was on the 1400.org?

all good thanks mate, I thought it maybe you.  Been a few years now without my 14, still miss her though  :'(  Mind you once I have finished my cb500/4 build there is always room for another as long as I don't build something else in the meantime  ;D cheers (KDC)
