Life but not as we know it. Please help.
« on: May 15, 2011, 02:04:48 PM »
It has been a good and frustrating day.

I had problems with the bike semi-starting (started and then died after a few seconds), but it was missing something awful, then realised I had the plug leads the wrong way round, for some reason I was counting cylinder 1 on the right side of the bike not the left (DOH!!!!).

After I realised what an idiot I am, I tried the bike again, it will start and sounds good but again only for a few seconds.

Now I know the problem is carbs (oh no I hear you all cry).  I have cleaned them and made sure the jets are clean (I will take the carbs off and do them again just to be sure), I can also start the bike fine with the choke on but it dies again when the carb is off, so I think there is a blockage somewhere.

However what I need to do is set the float heights as one of them is leaking petrol from the overflow.

Can somebody please let me know how to check the float heights correctly?   i.e. where do I check them and how (carbs right way up, carbs upside down etc).

Many thanks

Sean

The global 550 carb guru is based in the US and goes by the name of "Two Tired"

He wrote most of the FAQ for the .net site that you can find here:

Read it all first. Then decide what to do.
